Biography

Sam Lightnin' Hopkins was born in Centerville, Texas, March 15th, 1912. When he was around 10 years old, Lightnin' met Blind Lemon Jefferson (one of the most popular blues performers of that era). This encounter was to have a profound effect on Hopkins. He lived the life of a bluesman, even serving time on a Texas road gang in the late ?30s. His first recording was made November 4th, ... I have this collection on LP. The track listing on Amazon does not correspond with the contents of my LP, which is titled "Mojo Hand" and manufactured by the Collectables record label. If the CD cover appeared on this page then I could review the product with more confidence. The LP cover is almost entirely red, with a big fist and forearm jutting from one corner into the center of the square. Anyway, caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).
"Mojo Hand" features very little improvisation and none of Lightnin's famous stream-of-consciousness material. The set sounds like a real attempt to score on "the market." It's sharp, professional and intense, very unlike Lightnin's later recordings for Prestige/Vanguard in the '60s, which are more folk-traditional in orientation and more haphazard musically. Here, the monaural production is excellent; vocals and guitar are both miked perfectly (there's slight distortion, which is for the better).
My favorite track is the closer, "Santa," a fundamentally filthy Xmas song. The version of "Mojo Hand" which opens the LP is superior to others I've run across elsewhere. For all these reasons I would rank this album at 5 stars, but it's docked a star for economic reasons - the 9 tracks run 33 minutes, 8 seconds, less than half the length of most reissue CDs. Couldn't the Collectables company have found something else to fill the time?

the other reviewer is correct in stating that this reissue is not the same as the original one, but it is a nice collection of early Lightnin Hopkins material, less folk-oriented, like his later stuff, and doesn't have any of his "steam-of-consciousness' songs, like "everybody's blues", for example.

Just when you thought you would never have to buy another Lightin Hopkins disc again, along comes Mojo Hand. Recorded in the 60's, the man plays electric acoustic guitar, plus fabulous piano on one cut. Relaxed and jazzy, a superb counterpoint to the Herald Sessions. Great album.

The mystery for me is that given the plethora of Lightning recordings available, Bobby Robinson's sessions stay in print.

True, "Mojo Hand" was a "hit", but it's hard to see why. All of Lightning's "hits" on Gold Star are superior stuff, and "Mojo" is, listened to comparatively, one of his sloppier and less inventive uptempo tunes. The rest of the sides aren't inspired either.

The sad truth is that when Lightning began to record with other musicians, even just a rhythm section of bass and drums, he became lazy (do I mean lazier?). He let the other musicians do what he accomplished by himself on Gold Star, Aladdin, and Modern. The trouble starts with the Herald sessions, though he's still in great form then (though that over-amplified guitar does nothing for him: those who praise "Hopkins Sky Hop" must think speed and distortion are positives.)

Listen to "Fast Life Woman" or "Walkin' Blues" on Gold Star and tell me that Lightning ever recorded anything better.
