5.0 out of 5 stars So-Called "Sampler" Puts Many Oldies CDs To Shame, July 9, 2008
In the one page of liner notes that accompany this CD put out by Geoff Brown of Mojo Magazine of London, England, editor-in-chief Phil Alexander, as a lead-in to his comments written in December 2007, quotes Isaac Hayes as saying "Stax always has been and always will be soul music. I am coming back to Stax because there is still so much to do."

Certainly, back in the 1960s and 1970s, when Soul was in its heyday, Stax and its various subsidiaries (Volt, Truth, Enterprise) were at the forefront and, in this so-called "sampler," Mr. Brown has chosen 15 great tracks, 10 of which were hit singles.

The opening cut, Mr. Pitiful, was a # 10 R&B/# 41 Billboard Pop Hot 100 for the late, great Otis Redding early in 1965 on Volt 124, while from 1968/1969 they present I Forgot To Be Your Love by William Bell (# 10 R&B/# 45 Hot 100 on Stax 0015), and Why Is The Wine Sweeter (On The Other Side?) by Eddie Floyd, which peaked at # 30 R&B/# 98 Hot 100 in December 1969 on Stax 0051.

In 1971, Jody's Got Your Girl And Gone became a # 1 R&B/# 39 Hot 100 in February on Stax 0085 for Johnnie Taylor, and later that year Rufus Thomas had The Breakdown (Part 1) peak at # 2 R&B/# 31 Hot 100 in September on Stax 0098. The hits from 1972 are: Hearsay by The Soul Children (# 5 R&B/# 44 Hot 100 in April on Stax 0119); I've Been Lonely For So Long by Frederick Knight (# 8 R&B/# 27 Hot 100 in May on Stax 0117); and This World by The Staple Singers (# 6 R&B/# 38 Hot 100 in September on Stax 0137)

Breaking Up Somebody's Home by Albert King began its climb to # 35 R&B/# 91 Hot 100 in December 1972 on Stax 0147, but actually topped out early in January 1973, and from 1975 you get Ain't No Need Of Crying by The Rance Allen Group, which finished at # 61 R&B on Truth 3210 in February.

Soul Clap '69 was the uncharted B-side of Mrs. Robinson (# 35 R&B/# 37 Hot 100 in July 1969 on Stax 0037)) by Booker T. & The MG's, The Devil Is Dope was the uncharted flip of Hey You! Get Off My Mountain by The Dramatics (# 5 R&B/# 43 Hot 100 in May 1973 on Volt 4090), and Soulsville backed Isaac Hayes' Let's Stay Together (# 25 R&B/# 48 Hot 100 in May 1972 on Enterprise 9042). Walking The Back Streets And Crying by Little Milton did not chart in 1972 on Stax 0124, while My Man Believes In Me seems to be an album cut by Carla Thomas, probably recorded circa 1967.

Also in the insert is a list of the tracks showing the primary CD from which each was culled. I came across my copy at a garage sale.
