Editorial Reviews

The Spencer Davis Group will be well known to you through their classic R&B singles which are still club and radio favourites, thanks to great riffs, thumping production and mature vocals. This album collects together many of the same songs that the Group released on their singles and albums but here recorded in live sessions for radio broadcast. They provide a fascinating contrast in performance and you get proof of just how good a Group they were at successfully interpreting American R&B, and also what a tight musical unit they were and how well their original numbers stood up when performed live.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Most Underrated British Band, July 22, 2002
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mojo Rhythms & Midnight Blues The Live Album Vol 1: Sessions 1965-1968 (Audio CD)
The Spencer Davis Group may be the most underrated group in the British Invasion. The band had a tight, swinging sound, a nice balance between guitars and keyboards, and a tasty selection of musical influences - not to mention rock's greatest white-soul singer (Stevie Winwood). Their albums featured some of the best British blues and R&B, along with pop-rock to rival what the Beatles were doing at the same time (this was pre-"Sgt. Pepper," after all). Perhaps one day the SDG will finally get their due.

As to this particular release, it consists of "live" BBC recordings, which were essentially live-in-the-studio takes that were intended to be as close to the originals as possible. That makes this release a greatest-hits collection as much as a "live" album. Furthermore, the final four tracks were recorded after the departure of essential front-man Steve Winwood. While not essential, however, they do make a nice sampler of post-Winwood SDG, and "With Their New Face On" is a classic.
