Live Cuts from an Underrated British Band, July 22, 2002
This review is from: Mojo Rhythms & Midnight Blues, Vol. 2: Live 1965-1968 (Audio CD)
The Spencer Davis Group may be the most underrated group in the British Invasion. The band had a tight, swinging sound, a nice balance between guitars and keyboards, and a tasty selection of musical influences - not to mention rock's greatest white-soul singer (Stevie Winwood). Their albums featured some of the best British blues and R&B, along with pop-rock to rival what the Beatles were doing at the same time (this was pre-"Sgt. Pepper," after all). Perhaps one day the SDG will finally get their due.
As to this particular release, "Mojo Rhythms Vol. 2" is THE essential SDG live album. Unlike "Vol. 1," which consisted of straight-ahead BBC "live" takes, the selections on "Vol. 2" are actual live concert recordings.
This is great stuff that deserves a wider audience.

Spencer Davis Group Fans Will Enjoy These Live Recordings., March 25, 2011
This review is from: Mojo Rhythms & Midnight Blues, Vol. 2: Live 1965-1968 (Audio CD)
When The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who re exported rock music to the US others followed, some with more to offer than others.
This live album from The Spencer Davis Group shows them to be better than most when it comes to blues rock.
I already knew and liked Somebody Help Me, Keep On Running and Gimmie Some Lovin', so no problems there, however the band's take on blues rock is generally not my preferred choice in music.
Spencer Davis fans should not be put off, the quality and content of these recordings are well worth searching out.
