Our authentic Mexican mortar and pestle is handcarved of natural volcanic stone so it's just the right shape and texture for grinding herbs, whole spices and rubs, and for mixing sauces and pastes. bought this for my wife and i had to season it. just grinding whith the pestal is for the birds. if you use a drill and wire brush, it helps smooth it out a lot. if you use a peanut grinder thats evan faster. i spent a hour or so with power tools and then used the rice to finish it out. i hope this helps someone other than me. fast delivery and a nice looking rock. thank you.

I received this Mexican Mortar and Pestle several months ago and am STILL grinding to smooth it out. Everyone that comes over takes a turn at grinding with rice for a few minutes. Little black specs continue to show up, so I have not used it yet. I'm sorry I purchased this item.

I loved this, I got it as a gift for my mother-in-law and she thought it was amazing. This is one of the nicer mortar and pestal sets I have seen. If you are someone who likes to grind your own herbs this is the product for you!
