5.0 out of 5 stars Darn Good Book
My parents got me a copy of this book after hearing the author on a Boston radio station. At first I wasn't interested in the subject matter, but when my dad told me that he learned a lot more than his agent had ever told him, I decided to read it. It's a quick read (I read it in three days) but don't let that fool you because there is so much useful information. I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful book but only a page or two on Mold.
Useful book but only a page or two on Mold. The book name would lead one to assume that this book has an emphasis on Mold and Water damage claims. But there is not much in there on mold and water damage. Mostly there is general information. I found the book informative never the less.

I particularly like the section entitled, "Is Your House Underinsured," and for that topic alone, I recommend this book to everyone that owns a house.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Authority On Homeowners Insurance, April 11, 2005

I'm an insurance Claims Manager for one of the biggest insurance companies on the planet and have been in the business for 33 years. My company is not thrilled about Martinez' book because it gives the homeowner a tremendous advantage, so I am writing this using an alias.

Instead of just scratching the surface and treating homeowners insurance as just another "financial issue," as everyone else who's written a book about it has, the author delves deep into every aspect of the subject matter and does it in a really clear and simple manner.

It's about time. I've never read a more comprehensive book on what I do for a living that's more easy to read and understand than thisone.

This is the homeowners insurance book for dummies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped me during a mold claim, December 9, 2004

This book has all of the information I was looking for when my insurance adjuster for my recent mold claim "dropped the ball." When he realized that I was aware of his mistake (which I think the average person would have overlooked), and I was poised to get resolution by applying the author's advice, my claim was quickly and miraculously settled to my satisfaction. Needless to say, there's tons of valuable information in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for homeowners, October 29, 2004

Get out your homeowners policy and get ready to make some calls. Martinez removes the veil of complication from the insurance game in an easy-to-read guide that belongs on the bookshelf of everyone who owns a home, and wonders if they truly have all the protection they need. Written in an easy-to-reference style, the book guides you through several scenarios common to the home owning experience with tips and tools for making sure you prepare for the worst, even if that day never comes. The practicality of this read is coupled with a dry wit that makes the reader laugh while at the same time making them think about a subject many homeowners never address until it's too late.

This little book surprised me in the amount of helpful information it contains despite its small size. The author purposely wrote it in short nodes meant to get right to the point and not waste the reader's time. It's a great handbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Was the Book I Needed - "Dummies" Book a Waste of $, April 4, 2005

I was looking for a book that discussed IN DETAIL homeowners insurance, and I found it in this one.

I also bought "Insurance for Dummies," which was paired on Amazon with this book as an enticement. The "Dummies" book is a waste of money if what you're looking for is in-depth info on homeowners insurance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book, October 21, 2007
This review is from: Mold, Fire, Flood & Other Topics: Homeowners Insurance Explained (Paperback)
This book is an encyclopedia in terms of how much information it has. I knew NOTHING about homeowners insurance until I bought it.

The guy whose review says it was "biased" is a morone. In more than one section, the author tells the reader to report their insurance company to the appropriate state agency that'll investigate any shenanigans by unscrupulous adjusters and insurance companies (see pages 91 & 100, among others).

Anyway, it's a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I got a Copy, October 4, 2007
This review is from: Mold, Fire, Flood & Other Topics: Homeowners Insurance Explained (Paperback)
While a fire burned parts of my house, three clowns (i.e., public adjusters) appeared in front of my property. Each one told me how they could get me "the biggest" settlement if I agreed to their representation for "only" 30 percent of my settlement.

I couldn't believe my ears. There was my house, still smoldering, and all they could talk about was how they could get me the biggest settlement. I promptly ran their butts off my property.

My neighbor, who's a good friend, then told me about this book. I was skeptical before reading it but, after I read it, I found myself understanding my policy and what's involved in the claims process.

The advise is down-to-earth, explanations are concise, and the material is presented from an unbiased perspective. (The author goes so far as to encourage the reader to sue their insurance company if they screw up.)

Good book.

This book is great and very easy to read. It is divided into short chapters by specific topics, so you don't have to wade through a lot of unrelated information to come up with the answer to your question. I recommend this for any homeowner!
