First Graders Recommend,
By First Graders at The Potomac School in McLean... (McLean, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Hardcover)
First grade students complimented the charming watercolor illustrations, THEN noted that this story is both happy and sad. When Mole finds an abandoned baby bird, he takes it home. He builds a nest for his new charge, finds it food, and learns how to feed it. When the bird flutters its wings to fly, Mole builds a cage. Thankfully, grandfather arrives just in time and helps Mole learn the lesson of love and loss. First graders waited with bated breath for the story's conclusion. Would Mole set the baby bird free?

I cry every time,
By
This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Hardcover)
My 3-year-old daughter and I get a huge stack of books from the library every couple of weeks -- "Mole and the Baby Bird" was in our last stack. While my daughter's tastes are erratic, I absolutely love this book -- in fact, this is the first children's book I've felt inspired by enough to write a review. The simplicity of the language ("Then he cried.") makes the simple story incredibly moving and raw. Each time I read about baby bird alone in his dark cage (especially with the wonderful imagery) my voice chokes up -- even after multiple readings. Well done!

Just a lovely story...,

This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Board book)
My husband picked this up for my son (18 months) at our local independent bookstore. Since then, it is a consistent favorite - not just with our son, but with the entire family. It is beautifully told, a lovely tale, and wonderfully illustrated. I actually came on this site hoping to find more of her books in print. I believe it is a story that will bear re-telling for years to come.

beautiful story about love,
This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Hardcover)
Mole finds a baby bird and wants to keep it as a pet. He loves his bird so much but realizes, with the help of Granddad Mole, that the bird is meant to fly. The lesson of loving and letting go is a special one in this book.

I bought the board book version of this book for my daughter. She is almost 2yrs old and loves this book. You can see her little expressions and know that she understands the story. She is sad to see the bird in the cage and she is happy to see him fly free. Great life lesson for little ones and adults alike.

Great Story Told With Few Words,

This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Hardcover)
It can be so hard to find books for my 2 year old that have great narratives, but do so with an economy of words. This book has perfect pacing that holds my son's attention. He loves having this book re-read to him. Although, I don't think he understands the entire story, he does ask follow up questions about it that make me realize he is picking up a lot more than I would have expected.

Picked this book up at Goodwill a week ago, without looking at it much. Bedtime was a very pleasant surprise when we decided to read this one. Both my three year old son and I loved it, and it's part of our reading most bedtimes now.

Good book for learning about caring and love,
This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Board book)
This little story is a good tool for talking with young children about caring for other living creatures. Also good for talking about creature in the wild and what should and should not "belong" to us. Even adults can learn something from this book.

Perfect for teaching theme,

This review is from: Mole and the Baby Bird (Board book)
When I introduce theme to my fourth grade students, I like to use short, easily decodable books. This book is perfect. It's quick to read, but it leaves a lasting impression, and gives us plenty to talk about. This is perfect for any teacher's shelf!
