Book Description

2 and upThe Mole Sisters

The irresistible and irrepressible Mole Sisters!

After starting out in a new direction, the Mole Sisters find themselves in the middle of a field of wavy wheat. Back and forth, up and down, the Mole Sisters play the time away, going everywhere they can -- including straight to bed at the end of their tiring day.

With unfaltering optimism, the Mole Sisters make the most out of each day. They are always ready to laugh and find every opportunity for fun! The sisters continue to make molehills out of all the mountains that stand in their way.

Roslyn Schwartz's colored-pencil artwork is bright and lush, and she conveys the Mole Sisters' love for life with minimum text that is easy to follow for any toddler or preschooler.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-In these two series installments, the siblings go about their day with zest whether it be venturing out into a wheat field or simply doing nothing. In Busy Bees they relax but observe that the bees are hard at work; in Wavy Wheat the plot revolves around the moles' adventure in a wheat field. Action phrases provide ample opportunities for child participation. For example, the sisters "Swish to the right-swish to the left-one, two, three and-'DOWN!'" Always upbeat and jolly, the characters are gentle companions. The small format is perfect for little hands but less practical for storytimes. Images are rendered in muted earth tones using colored pencils in a style reminiscent of pointillism. They have an almost dreamy quality. Independence, optimism, intelligence, and love of adventure are good qualities for children and these siblings are fine examples.

Review

[A] good book for preschoolers to share while sitting quietly with on their parent's lap. Recommended. (Kathleen Kirk Canadian Materials )

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Preschool, July 22, 2002

"carlan" (Montreal, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mole Sisters and the Wavy Wheat (Paperback)
It is always delightful to see good new books for children, and I believe that the "Mole Sisters" will become nursery classics. The illustration of the entire series is exquisite--simple, yet vivid and witty. The prose is spare, with each word perfectly chosen, and room for parent-child extended discussion of the action. The characters are charming, likeable, confident, and optimistic without being in any way saccharine. My daughter was given several of the Mole Sisters books as a 2nd birthday present, since which I have bought the others for ourselves, and have bought all of them, many times over, as gifts for other children. My daughter, now 3, began reading to herself at a very early age, and these were among the first books that she read alone. My two younger children are also choosing these over and over again to have read to them. Because of the gently philosophical subject matter of the books they are also entirely suitable for slightly older children, who will easily master the text, but who will then have questions about the topics raised. My advice is: get them all. If you don't want to take the risk, then get one--frankly, at this price you can afford to take a chance--and I'm sure that you'll want the others. They are all wonderful, although my own favourite (by a small margin)is "Wavy Wheat".
