Editorial Reviews

Now down to the duo of Ian Ballamy and Thomas Stronen, Food looks to be more active than ever. This, their fifth album, was recorded by Jeremy Cox over a period of two years and mixed by Ashley Slater, who also contributes on three tracks. Maria Kannegaard plays Fender Rhodes on five tracks. Stronen was always an important writer in Food and it's fair to say that a good amount of their earlier output was written as opposed to improvised. Molecular Gastronomy, however, is mostly improvised, much in the same way as the music of Stronen's other duo Humcrush. Considered to be one of the most inventive Norwegian drummers, he is here closer in approach to what he's doing in Humcrush. Rune Grammofone. 2007.

3.0 out of 5 stars Group down to a duo (well, almost), March 24, 2008

This review is from: Molecular Gastronomy (Audio CD)
This is the latest version of Food, a group i've followed since they started. In fact i've known Iain Ballamy's work since his Bruford Earthworks days (and solo cds) and have always admired his creativity and incredible playing. But as the years went by the Food group which started as a sort of jazz group (sort of because there's is a lot of experimentation, fusion influences, avant garde elements, etc. which kept it from being just a 'jazz' group) has more and more moved to electronics and 'intense' ambiense. This cd moves even more into that direction and while it is not at all a bad move i kind of miss the old group. Here the band is Ballamy plus another old member from the Food group + guests. Nice anyways. Conditionally recommended.
