Product Description

Molecular Models set is used to study of organic and inorganic chemistry, and can be adapted to biochemistry. Students can use the set to model organic structures, cyclic compounds, and the concept of stereoisomerism for detailed examination. The set consists of 214 pieces for assembly: (35) white semi-sphere hydrogen monovalent atoms, (16) black carbon tetrahedral atoms-23.0mm, (6) black carbon trigonal bipyramidal atoms-23.0mm, (4) blue nitrogen tetrahedral atoms-23.0mm, (8) red oxygen divalent atoms-23.0mm, (8) green halogen monovalent atoms-17.0mm, (2) brown bromine monovalent atoms-17.0mm, (2) orange iodine monovalent atoms-17.0mm, (6) white hydrogen monovalent atoms-17.0mm, (2) gray metal octahedral atoms-23.0mm, (6) pink p orbitals, (6) purple p orbitals, (45) gray rigid bonds-27.0mm, (12) gray flexible bonds-43.0mm, and (55) white short links. The atom centers are solid plastic for durability, and are in common angular orientations for ease of use. The set includes a tool for removing bonds.

Molecular Models Company manufactures molecular sets, kits, and individual expansion parts for use in chemistry research and educational settings. The company, founded in 1967, is headquartered Beloit, WI.

The model kit is great because it has a high number of carbons and hydrogen. The main problem with the kit is that it feels unorganized it would of been nice to have a couple partitions inside the box to keep my elements and bonds organized. Also it would have been better if the all the hydrogens were full globes instead of the semi-circles that come with the kit. Aside from those two minor points the model kit is great for its intended purpose.

More than enough pieces to do about anything you could need to, but the hydrogen atoms are not spheres, but half-spheres which I understand, but makes it a bit annoying. also, the short connectors are not sufficient to hold the half-spheres to the carbon. They hydrogens like to pop off.

This model set is great! The box is about 8 1/2 long, 4 inches wide and about 2 inches thick. It is lightweight and easy to carry around whenever you need it. If you want a "bigger" picture, this is better to use than other model kits, which are thin and look like toothpicks and peas. It's easy to put together and breakdown. Most of the spheres are the size of a nickel and a few are about the size of a dime. For Organic Chemistry, this is especially helpful for understanding Newman Projections and Lewis Structures.

For all you organic chemistry students, YOU NEED THIS. I am currently taking my first semester of organic chemistry and a molecular modeling kit has been absolutely invaluable, especially once you get into stereochemistry (which will be very, very soon and will never leave you, sorry to break it to you). If you're not the kind of person who can visualize 3-D molecules in your head, like me, then I really don't know how you'll ever be able to do well in organic chemistry. It's great for understanding isomers, wedge-and-dash structures, chair conformations, and all that wonderful stuff that gives me headaches when trying to visualize with just my brain. I chose this set over other sets because it comes with more pieces. I like that the hydrogens are little white hats rather than whole circles like the other molecules. It just makes them easier to manage and remove from molecules. The reason I didn't give this set 5 stars is because the box doesn't provide any way to organize the molecules. Also, the box always wants to shut when it's open, which is really annoying when I need to leave it open to work on building molecules. Other than that I really love it. The nerd in me has to admit that they're also just fun to play with. They're like Legos for chemistry nerds.

Bottom line, I love it, they've helped me do well on tests and they entertain me.

The kit works alright for O chem but it is hard to do ring flips and the bonds are kind of loose fitting. I would recommend putting this in a ziploc immediately so you can keep a benzene ring prebuilt. It will save you from having to dig through the different carbons to find the ones with the right bond angles.

Couldn't have passed the class without it. Mrs V, General Chemistry teacher at Scottsdale Community College, helped me pick it out and Adam the chem tutor was impressed that it can do Stereochemistry because it has the ability to rotate which is BIG TIME IMPORTANT.

Organic Chemistry is so visual, and so hard to get the concept across that I used these each time I had to explain a concept in my study group. SN1 & SN2 with Tertiary and Primary is easy to remember how the attack happens and why because it is now a Visual Concept.

For the money, it has more pieces than most sets. Some of the pieces can be hard to pull apart or put together, but it doesnt fall apart like the wooden ones either.

I purchased this kit because of the number of pieces in the set. When I received it, it did not have a any sulfur and the hydrogens were half size (makes the molecules look cheap). I didn't like it so I sent it back. Of course, I compared it to MolyMod. Perhaps, this was the mistake.
