Much of the appeal of Moleskine's notebooks, aside from their straightforward "use value" as places to write things down, is the powerful aesthetic pleasure that they provide. The Soft Cover Pocket model happens to be an especially attractive object - it seems to exude a sense of possibility and purpose as it nestles in your hand or pocket, or as it sits on your bedside table. It waits quietly for you to pick it up, slip off the strap, and little by little fill its pages. It is understandable that the more intangible qualities of Moleskine notebooks (which, let's be honest, probably reflect the company's carefully constructed brand as much as anything else) can sometimes make them seem like fetish objects for the self-absorbed bourgeoisie. But if any mass-produced consumer item could have a soul, this notebook would be it.
UPDATE: After about 6 months of use, the imitation leather has started to get "bubbles", presumably where the glue is no longer holding the flexible cover. While this is basically a cosmetic issue, it does bother me because it smacks of careless design/workmanship. So two things:
1) Has this happened to anyone else's notebook?
2) Does anybody know of a way to fix it?
In terms of the build, it's what you expect from a moleskine. Nice smooth paper, pocket, placemarker, and elastic strap - all features I consider essential in a notebook. The difference is of course the soft cover. The soft cover gives this model an extra bit of flexibility that I appreciate when placing it in my pocket. The pages are a bit thin and see-through, but this isn't a problem for me.
Nevertheless, there are some personal criticisms that I have regarding this notebook that you may want to take into account when making your purchasing decision. Firstly, while I think the length and width are perfect, I wish the notebook was a little thinner. It's about a little over a centimeter thick, which is a little large to carry in your pocket. The thickness gives the notebook more pages, but I value portability opposed to pages in a pocket notebook.
Furthermore, the back pocket ripped recently, exposing the contents. The pocket is essentially just a piece of folded cardboard. The rip occurred right along the fold while it was in my pocket. I have no idea how this happened, and I can't say for certain whether this speaks to it's quality or not. I did have a few post-its and index cards in the pocket (which I like to use for throwaway reminders), so that may have factored into the incident.Read more ›
I recommend this version depending on the usage of the notebook. I keep the hard cover for keeping in the bag or on the top of my desk.
The only point about the soft cover version is that it seems that the elastic band seems not to be as sttrong. but it still can hold what is necessary.
This note book is amazing! At first I bought it because I has been in love with its style for a long time (you know, with the curved angles and black leather!) but I didnt know what the name of the notebook is. Then when I found them, bought them, they are so gorgeous!!! Soft leather, smooth papers and elegant style! But after awhile I didnt know how I should use them. I didnt want to even write on them, so I just kept this small one on my pocket and now, I have to bring it everyday I go! The small size is definitely perfect in your pocket but still has the enough size to draw everything! I use it to draw about my days, like journal and when I m totally in love with it, I draw everything, my jewelery ideas, my pictures... everything you know!
I am not that artist can give you some advices but honestly, if you like to draw, or write, you should buy these Moleskine! I dont think you cant stop making notes when you have them.
Try them, and love them!
Hope you guys will have fun with them! :)

Good quality. However, it says "192 pages" and I learned that that does not mean 192 pieces of paper inside, but 96 pages counted as front and back. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Kristin
