Ok, but strange layout,

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I've wanted a decent wine journal for some time, and was excited when I saw this one. The execution fell a little short though. The book is black, hardcover, with an embossed wine bottle and glasses, it's pretty cool looking. There is an elastic bookmark that helps keep the book closed, that was handy. The layout is where my biggest problems are. There are a couple of note pages at the beginning, a glossary, some pre-defined tabs are next, they are: sparkling, White, Rose, Red, Fortified-Sweet, and Spirits. There were 6 tabs for you to define yourself after that. The pages are all numbered and there is a spot for an index in the back which I liked quite a bit. The notes sections in the pre-defined sections didn't seem quite practical, each page will hold information for one wine. Information about the suggested glass, ideal pairing, and where/when/with who didn't seem to add much value. I would have liked a more open format like the undefined tabs have. Those tabs are broken into 5 blank sections, so you could run on with some reviews and be terse with others.
The final part of the book is a pocket, I guess for receipts or labels. There are a number of stickers some are for the undefined tabs, others are to decorate your reviews. There is also information on how to download templates that would be pasted into the book. I'm not sure that the binding would withstand too many pages pasted in.

I reviewed many wine journals before I purchased this one for my wife. Most journals were divided into categories by varietal or type such as Champaign, Cabernet, Blush, and the like. Though this might be useful if you consumed every varietal on a regular basis, it did not make sense for us. We mostly drink red wine. Usually Pinot Noir, Burgundy, or Claret. Occasionally we have a high-end Cab. (Cabs must be excellent in our pantheon of wine or they are not worth drinking. Think Perseus to our Andromeda.) Having half the book devoted to White wine and Champaign, which we seldom drink, is a waste of space. We just wanted a simple journal that would allow us to record the wines we actually drink without all the groupings and categories. Though this journal has some categorization too, the journal also contains a large section that is "open" and undefined. This is perfect for people who, like us, have more focused pallets.
The journal's pages are laid our nicely and standardized questions guide you to record your impressions consistently. This last point is important if you care about the journal as a reference. This journal is also great for someone just beginning their journey with wine. Helper pages describe the lingo which is always useful for newcomers. The journal is well crafted and worthy of the precious content captured on its pages. Very good over all and typical of the quality I expect from Moleskine
