Ok, but strange layout,

I've wanted a decent wine journal for some time, and was excited when I saw this one. The execution fell a little short though. The book is black, hardcover, with an embossed wine bottle and glasses, it's pretty cool looking. There is an elastic bookmark that helps keep the book closed, that was handy. The layout is where my biggest problems are. There are a couple of note pages at the beginning, a glossary, some pre-defined tabs are next, they are: sparkling, White, Rose, Red, Fortified-Sweet, and Spirits. There were 6 tabs for you to define yourself after that. The pages are all numbered and there is a spot for an index in the back which I liked quite a bit. The notes sections in the pre-defined sections didn't seem quite practical, each page will hold information for one wine. Information about the suggested glass, ideal pairing, and where/when/with who didn't seem to add much value. I would have liked a more open format like the undefined tabs have. Those tabs are broken into 5 blank sections, so you could run on with some reviews and be terse with others. The final part of the book is a pocket, I guess for receipts or labels. There are a number of stickers some are for the undefined tabs, others are to decorate your reviews. There is also information on how to download templates that would be pasted into the book. I'm not sure that the binding would withstand too many pages pasted in.

I reviewed many wine journals before I purchased this one for my wife. Most journals were divided into categories by varietal or type such as Champaign, Cabernet, Blush, and the like. Though this might be useful if you consumed every varietal on a regular basis, it did not make sense for us. We mostly drink red wine. Usually Pinot Noir, Burgundy, or Claret. Occasionally we have a high-end Cab. (Cabs must be excellent in our pantheon of wine or they are not worth drinking. Think Perseus to our Andromeda.) Having half the book devoted to White wine and Champaign, which we seldom drink, is a waste of space. We just wanted a simple journal that would allow us to record the wines we actually drink without all the groupings and categories. Though this journal has some categorization too, the journal also contains a large section that is "open" and undefined. This is perfect for people who, like us, have more focused pallets. The journal's pages are laid our nicely and standardized questions guide you to record your impressions consistently. This last point is important if you care about the journal as a reference. This journal is also great for someone just beginning their journey with wine. Helper pages describe the lingo which is always useful for newcomers. The journal is well crafted and worthy of the precious content captured on its pages. Very good over all and typical of the quality I expect from Moleskine

Elegant, well made, nicely organized connoisseur's notebook -- would make a nice gift for the wine lover,

I love Moleskine, and have been using their notebooks and planners for a long time. They are durable and look good, and have high quality paper. The Passions series is designed for taking notes on various hobby subjects - in this case wine. There are sections for different types of wine, each of which is filled with forms that allow you to fill in the details and take notes on individual wines. There are also several completely blank sections for filling out whatever additional details you might like. This would make a nice gift for the right person. I don't think I'd actually use this, since it's a bit big for convenience (it would fit in a purse or a backback, but not in the pocket) and wine's not my thing, but for the afficionado I expect it'd be perfect. I'd use the Moleskine Passions Film Journal, though I'd prefer a pocket-sized notebook.

Bought it for my wife and I'm very impressed by the quality (come on it's a Moleskine). My wife loves it and uses it ever time we try a new vintage. If you like wine and don't have time to make a custom journal, this is a great purchase.

Tracking Beverages of all Sorts,
This review is from: Moleskine Passions Wine Journal (Diary)
I received this journal as a gift and had it collecting dust on my bookshelf for quite sometime because I don't consider myself enough of a wine connoisseur to dedicate an entire journal. Recently as I've been exploring wines in more depth, I decided to flip through the journal again and was pleasantly surprised that only half of the journal was strictly reserved for wine. I decided to label the rest of my tabs Cocktails, Beers, Coffee, Tea, Restaurants and am thrilled to keep a list of all the lovely and memorable experiences that I have had in those areas. Such a great idea to start exploring different passions. And who knows, maybe after I fill up some of the topics, I'll find myself more dedicated to a specific area and a brand new journal. This is perfect for those looking to start exploring but also customizable for wine experts who prefer to dedicate the journal solely to wine.

This is another quality product from the folks at Moleskine. For those of us who taste, drink and buy a fair amount of wine, it is difficult to remember every wine you've tasted without jotting down some notes. For some time, I've used a blank Moleskine book for my notes, but find referring back to old notes difficult as the notes were made in the order the wines were sampled, with reds, whites, roses and so on all jumbled together. This journal is roughly half tasting pages tabbed in groups for sparkling, white, red, rose, fortified and spirits. I like the way the tasting pages are arranged, and can see how each of the areas could be very useful either for noting information and impressions or jogging my memory further. Roughly the other half of the book is blank pages in 6 unlabeled, tabbed sections. What are these for? I really don't know. It is the surplus of non-tasting note pages that keep me from giving this journal 5 stars. I would have preferred 3/4 of the pages be tasting pages and just have some blank pages at the back. I do love the pages in the back for making your own index. Brilliant! My only other quibble with the book is the size. If it could have been in the smaller Moleskine format, breast pocket sized, it would be even better. I'll be using this book as I start tasting for my second wine guide and see if I can find a use for those back pages.

My daughter had this on her wish list and I decided to get one for my sister too! How many times have you said, "This is a great bottle of wine. I hope I can remember the name of it." Now you can keep track of it in your wine journal. You can even give the wine star ratings. Write your own reviews on wine! Fun gift and reasonably priced.
