A most delicious notebook,

I use the Moleskine Sketchbook as a journal. I often like to adhere mementos to the pages, as well as draw diagrams and sketches, so I prefer the unlined, archival pages. Additionally, I am a bit touchy about ink showing through the back of the page, and find the thick pages of the sketchbook adequate for even a fine Sharpie. The pocket at the back is handy for odd receipts and such, and the elastic keeps larger notes in place. Also, I admit I get a cheap OCD thrill from the uniform line of perfect black books on the bookcase. And they smell divine.

I am an illustrator, so sketching is a daily need for me. I always batted with sketchbooks because they felt as sturdy as napkins and just as useless when it comes to archiving. Even the heavy grade more expensive ones felt either TOO thick and textured for graphite and ink or just flimsy and overpriced. I had to use bristol board notebooks for a long time (which was expensive) because I just could not find the right balance. All I have to say it - holy cow, this is THE BEST sketchbook I have ever owned.
The paper is thick, poster like (very close to thin bristol board actually) and a very soft beige color. It is, thank God, untextured - very smooth yet holds on to ink perfectly. The thickness allows you to use soft traces of watercolor and diluted ink without a lot of bending. (If you want to go heavier with liquids I suggest you purchase the Moleskine Watercolor Notebook. http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Watercolor-Notebook-Large/dp/8883705629/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234943712&sr=8-1 ) The pages are just large enough to give you good room yet small enough so the book is portable. The book bends far enough past the first 2 pages so you can actually draw across the pages. I use my book front to back not leaving one sheet uncovered and can draw horizontal landscapes thanks to the ability to use 2 pages at once. There is a small pocket on the back to store small sheets of paper and random things you might find while wandering the streets looking for inspiration. The hard cover is very thick and sturdy plus it has so many pages for this low low price. You can't beat it. My only regret is not having owned one sooner! I will never go back to other brands. Now if only they made larger sizes... :)

Great little sketchbook,

The Moleskine sketchbook is a pleasure to draw in. It has very heavy, creamy smooth paper, much heavier than the Moleskine blank journal. The paper takes all dry media (pens, graphite, charcoal, pastels) well with no bleed through on pens and markers. There is some bleed through on drawing ink. If you want to use wet media, get the Moleskine watercolor sketchbook instead.

Am a user of Moleskines for many years now and was rather excited with the release of these larger formatted ones...one does feel like Alice down the rabbit hole after taking the "small" potion...
Now the "but".....it seems if one erases even with moderate pressure you remove the cream colour of the page revealing the "white" of the paper...this was never the case with the regular moleskines...Have tried light pressure and repeated erasing does the same...

This review is from: Sketch Book A4 (Moleskine Srl) (Hardcover)
This is like a jumbo version of the traditional Moleskine Sketchbook. The pages have a little texture and are just heavy enough so you can use ink and it will not bleed through BUT they are not the same heavy bristol board-esque ones used in the smaller version. These pages are much thinner. The binding is tight and secure, the cover hard and durable. Overall this is a fantastic purchase and you can't beat Amazon's price at $10 below retail.
I will never buy another large notebook from another brand! At this size scanning from your home scanner is also a breeze.

The paper has changed,
This review is from: Moleskine Sketchbook Large (Hardcover)
I used these sketchbooks as long as I can remember. Now, the last 3 I've purchased all make my brush pens and calligraphy pens bead up and become maybe 50% opaque. The change in paper and the current Moleskins is just not good. I've had to switch brands after years.

Snazzy!,

This review is from: Moleskine Sketch-Book Large, Hard Red for Art (Moleskine Legendary Notebooks) (Hardcover)
This is the same as the large black Moleskine sketchbook, except the cover is red. The paper is cream-colored and very smooth. It can take acrylic paint, but it doesn't absorb water very well at all. If you are looking to use watercolors, Moleskine makes watercolor notebooks that you could use instead.
But beyond that, Moleskines make drawings look great! There's something about the color of the pages that sets sketches apart from books with white pages. Especially if you scan them and see them on a screen. I go to an art school, and moleskines are everywhere! It's nice to have a bright red cover to set mine apart from the others.

THE Sketchbook Preferred Worldwide,
By Alana (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moleskine Sketchbook Large (Hardcover)
As a designer, needless to say I sketch a lot. Inspiration is found everywhere around me and this sized Moleskine notebook is incredible to carry around.
How so? It's lightweight, the cover is great, the band to keep it closed is a lifesaver for keeping my pages clean & flat, the stock is wonderful for sketching in, and I use the folder inside on the back page to keep plane tickets, foreign currencies, and whatever else I find inspiring. A very famous designer first introduced me to these notebooks and told me he used nothing else. I bought my first one 3 years ago and never looked back. Also, if you are traveling and are seeking a travel journal- the Moleskin travel journals are incredible. They have maps, locations, linguistics, sketch pages, lined pages, a folder and more... Moleskine City Notebook Paris (Moleskine City Pocket Book) These notebooks were the legendary notebook used for the past two centuries by great artists and thinkers, including Van Gogh, Picasso, Hemingway and Chatwin... and hopefully by you soon. You won't regret it.

An Art Instructors' Take,
By
This review is from: Moleskine Sketchbook Large (Hardcover)
The paper is much thicker than I expected but it's pages will take washes, ink and even paint so it's an advance on the typical bound sketch book. The Moleskin really has the classic feel it advertises. In short, a great product that does exactly what it says it does. I will recommend it to all my art students without hesitation.

What Can I Say?!!,
By
This review is from: Moleskine Sketchbook Large (Hardcover)
What can I say? This is the be it all/end all of sketchbooks. If you are an artist, the awesome pages will accept lots of mixed media as long as you don't add too much water. An added plus is the fact that as you work along in your book, and your book becomes thicker and thicker (and as an artist, don't you just LOVE that!) there is a handy dandy strap to keep it all contained! Not to mention the lovely Moleskine pocket in the back to collect all that ephemera that you are going to put into your journal/sketchbook!! It's just divine. That's the only word for it. Divine.
