I was used to the hardcover Moleskine notebooks (large and small) and my initial reaction when I received the soft cover notebook was mild disappointment. I had previously used a similar product by Mead (which I haven't found on Amazon) which has sturdy leather covers, a stretch band that holds strong, an interior pocket that expanded quite a bit, the ribbon-style bookmark and had more pages of higher quality, a better feel. I bought this style, the plain and the lined... and wish I hadn't. I saw so many others that enjoyed...

5.0 out of 5 stars It will grow on you, October 21, 2010
This review is from: Moleskine Squared Notebook Soft Cover Pocket (Flexibound)
I was used to the hardcover Moleskine notebooks (large and small) and my initial reaction when I received the soft cover notebook was mild disappointment. At first, it seems flimsy in comparison, and it doesn't look as elegant as its hardcover sibling. So I decided to use it just to jot down random notes that I can then transfer back to my better organized hardcover large notebooks. It quickly grew on me and I now love it. It's more inviting and more comfortable to use than the prettier hardcovers. It just "feels right" in the hand. I liked it so much that I bought the 400-page Moleskine 2011 12 Month Daily Planner: Black Soft Cover Pocket to use not as planner, but as a thick notebook. It feels just as awesome, but with twice the capacity, and the dates don't really interfere much. Note to the Moleskine folks: there's probably a good market for thicker notebooks.

I noticed that people often ask what pens or pencils work well with the somewhat thin and permeable Moleskine paper and I've found that regular (non-gel) Pilot 1.0 ballpoint pens of various colors give fine results. For my more ad hoc notes, I use 0.5 mechanical pencils, including Pilot Color Eno which are great for emphasizing things without bleeding through.

As a side note, if anyone is looking for a similar style of notebook, but just a bit snazzier, take a look at the Exaclair Quo Vadis Habana Lined Journal 4 X 6 (Black). The cover is simulated leather and the pages are of higher quality, but it's 1/2 inch more in both directions which may be good or bad, depending on your need.

I use this notebook daily to study my professional pubs and take notes on techniques and procedures to improve my skills. Definitely the most useful and durable notebooks i've used since college.

Nice little notebook that works well for jotting down info, making little drawings,
keeping notes on restaurants and hotels. Faster for writing down phone numbers or web sites heard on the radio that taking out the iPhone. Plus it doesn't break or run out of battery. Has a nifty little pocket in the back to store a few mementos, which is a plus.
Better value than the Clairefontaine products I was using until now.

I bought this style, the plain and the lined... and wish I hadn't. I saw so many others that enjoyed this product, that I thought it would be better. This has a vinyl cover (I carry these in my left rear pocket) which bent the corners first day out, the elastic band is limp, and it's not holding up well to the abuse of daily use and being bent by sitting on it in my pocket, and the price is about twice that of the Mead product. I will finish using these, but don't intend to buy another.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little "pocket" book!, November 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moleskine Squared Notebook Soft Cover Pocket (Flexibound)
This little "pocket" squared book is great. I love the softbound cover, the elastic closure, the little secret pocket inside, where you can keep a couple photos or something else of interest. The cloth bookmark is also quite helpful for keeping my place. The binding is stitched well and it stays open and flat with ease. The only thing I would like is to see the Whitelines brand with something like this. The paper in this book is yellowish with dramatic, dark lines. The quality is good, but I would love to have something like this with the slightly gray paper and white lines around the squares. That would be incredible. This is still a great book though and I would highly recommend it. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Pad, October 22, 2011

There's a lot to like about this moleskin. Its well constructed and sturdy. The page saver and pocket we're good additions. I wish the paper was a little thicker. It does bleed through depending on the writing tool. A ball point pen or plain #2 pencil work best but aren't always available.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good, September 5, 2011

this notebook is good for just slipping in your pocket before you go somewhere, it has a bookmark too which is fairly useful. However the pages are lined like graph paper, this isn't horrible I just like horizontal lines better.

great notebook...the squared pages make it easier to write in that the blank pages or even the lined pages...in my opinion...
soft cover is easier to carry around than the hardcover..

3.0 out of 5 stars Clarity of Presentation - Moleskin squared soft cover notebook, July 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moleskine Squared Notebook Soft Cover Pocket (Flexibound)
Users of Moleskin notebooks have over time acquired an exact idea of what they want in a notebook, and when they find that in their favorite bookstore store, they are delighted. When this is not the case, there is Amazon. Alternatively, when what arrives is a different size, then the situation is as good as not finding the Moleskin in your favorite bookstore- only several days have gone by. And returning a low cost item isnt worthwhile. Much can be achieved by redesign of this ad. It is difficult to access exactly the notebook one wants through the Amazon search engine- and without reference sizes presented the notebooks appear identical. The reference to 'pocket' should be 'pocket-sized' and not appear as the last word, so as to avoid confusion between the size and the useful little pockets placed in the back of these notebooks.

This past year,
I have spent hours looking at Moleskin products both in bookstores and on Amazon- a frustrating experience in comparison with the days of old.
