3.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty and Great Quality, but...
This item is a great little unit, but be fore-warned: it won't fit your shotgun with optics or any accessories. I bought this item and was disappointed to find that any optics (even a little red dot sight) makes the shotgun too wide. So, if you have a naked shotgun, this item is for you. But, if you plan on having anything, even so much as a red dot sight that only sticks...

I bought this for spring snowmachine hunting. More than likely I'll buy a second scabbard to mount to the cowling. This is nice and compact for back carry. It seems to always want to flip over due to it being about 8" to 10" to short on the sling attach points. I have a Stevens with a 23" long barrel and it fits right up to the back trigger and safety. My modified choke long barrel set will not work, it is just to short of a scabbard. Otherwise it fits nicely in there sitting on the ground, but feels wrong when on my back. I don't want a scabbard that is only good for my shotgun, but didn't want a large open ended one to throw over my back either. Would be nice to be able to fit the scoped 17hmr in it too. I see the stitching being relieved and sewn back in to allow for a scoped rifle and a retaining strap would be nice as well. It is not a wide mouth so drawing the gun out with scabbard on your back is impractical anyways. I think if the sling attach point was 8"-10" closer to the butt of the shotgun it would work out better. A nice peace of mind to know when cruising across the snow that any bump isn't going to accidentally sling shot my short double barreled shotgun out. Once I add the wide mouth to it and move the sling attach point and add the retaining strap, it will be fine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate Scabbard, I Guess, August 25, 2011

I'm not entirely sure why I bought this. The scabbard itself is sturdy enough, and the Molle attachments work reasonably well. In my case, however, I can't find any practical use for it whatsoever.

My 870 with an 18.5" barrel will fit in the scabbard, tightly. Unfortunately, it has open rifle sights on it which rise about 0.75" above the barrel, and catch on the material inside of the scabbard if you're not extremely careful when taking the gun out. If you're using a tactical pump-action gun, you'd better have a bead sight on it, and the fit still won't quite be comfortable. A Rossi youth model 20 gauge fits perfectly (half of a Matched Pair), so if you need a holster for one of those you might choose this one.

I originally thought that I might get a frame pack with Molle attachments, and that the scabbard would affix to the side. I still haven't tried that, and it might work, but nothing else that I've tried seems to at all. I hooked it onto the back of a UTG load-bearing vest (you know, for zombies). It stayed where I put it, but was entirely awkward and made it difficult to balance the vest's load. I tried using the sling attachments on the scabbard, and found that it was heavier and less comfortable than just attaching a sling to the shotgun directly. The strap that came with the scabbard also has cheap metal clips that jab into you when you're not paying attention to them.

If you have something really solid to attach the scabbard to, like a jeep or a horse, then it might be more practical. I'm not sure if you can get a jeep with Molle attachments though, and I know that horses don't have them. For my part, I'll just keep a sling on the gun and leave the scabbard in the trunk.
