Book Description

4 and upP and up
A small pig has a big day out

Molly is old enough and smart enough to do things on her own, like shopping. When her grandmother sends her to the store for beans, Molly forgets what she’s supposed to buy and gets potatoes instead. When her grandmother asks Molly what happened, Molly tells her that the clerk insisted that she buy the potatoes. But Molly gets caught in her lie when Grandma goes to the store to sort out the mystery. After a stiff warning that she should tell the truth, Molly is given another chance. Poor Molly! She drops Grandma’s coin purse on the way to
the store . . .

With her delicate, expressive illustrations, Eva Eriksson treats readers to a sweet story about a young girl who learns that she can make mistakes and still accomplish great things.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Independence and self-sufficiency are so crucial to young Molly that she overlooks the importance of honesty and completing a task. Eriksson's lovely, expressive pastel illustrations help convey the emotions that the little pig experiences as she tries her hand at growing up. Her first solo shopping trip is not successful, resulting in a lesson from her grandmother about telling the truth and responsibility. Although Molly's second outing is somewhat less disastrous, grandmother again sorts out her woes. By the third trip, Molly begins doubting her abilities, but this trip is successful. This is a sweet, humorous tale that benefits from the softly colored, expressive illustrations. The only puzzle here is that Molly is a pig, while her grandmother seems to be a polar bear.

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 1. Molly is finally old enough to go alone to the store. Her important step to independence is a little shaky, but she's ultimately successful, thanks to Grandma's loving support. This gentle picture book, first published in Sweden, makes great use of an animal cast to tell a universal story. Delicate pastel illustrations show Molly as a small pig sauntering down the sidewalk past the other animal kids, bragging that she is on her own. Then the pictures show her overwhelmed by all the towering adult animal shoppers in the store. She messes up, forgets what Grandma sent her to buy, and lies to cover up her mistakes. Next time she loses her purse. Of course, in the end she gets it right--sort of. Always true to the small child's viewpoint, the story works because it is honest about the failure of a small kid who discovers that she is strong, even if she is not perfect. Hazel Rochman
