Book Description

January 2007 9 and up4 and upMolly Moon (Prebound)

Molly Moon returns . . . and bumps into earlierversions of herself -- four of them, to be exact -- all kidnaped and transported back in time to nineteenth-century India by Molly's most fearsome nemesis yet, an insane maharaja. Molly foiled his plans once already, by stopping Primo Cell from becoming president of the United States. This time around, the maharaja is determined to alter the course of history. The only thing standing in his way is Molly and her brave pug, Petula. . . .

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6–If reading a Molly Moon title means navigating a variety of twists, turns, and sudden surprising revelations, then this addition to the series is no exception. Having perfected her hypnotic technique and defeated her villainous uncle in Molly Moon Stops the World (HarperCollins, 2004), the protagonist is caught completely unaware when a stranger kidnaps her beloved pug, Petula. It isn't long before Molly follows the pet backwards in time to 1870 India. There, she meets the repulsive Maharaja of Waqt, a spoonerism-loving cad who collects time-traveling crystals. Seeing Molly as an obstacle to his plans, he sets about kidnapping her at ages ten, six, and three, and as a baby. Now she must rescue her former selves and find a way to defeat Waqt, all while navigating some tricky time travel and taking care not to change anything in the past that would significantly alter the future. Byng plays fast and loose with her time-travel rules, often contradicting herself and making up explanations for problems encountered along the way. The breakneck speed of the novel, which reads like an elaborate chase sequence, will undoubtedly please fans and leave them howling for the next installment. Though sloppy, the plot is undeniably engaging and even attempts to explain the rudimentary differences between Hinduism and Islam. Just don't expect any condemnations of colonialism. This is an ambitious addition to the genre and a first purchase for any library in which the previous titles are popular.–Elizabeth Bird, New York Public Library

More About the Author

Georgia Byng grew up outside Winchester, in England, near the river Itchen, with three naughty brothers and a sister. Her dad was nature loving and her mum was very encouraging and warm. The nearby country lane with its many cottages was somewhere Georgia first found out about characters, for it was teeming with them, and she used to interview them. Otherwise she would try to sell these neighbours things she had made. As a child she loved acting and so at 18 went to The Central School of Speech and Drama in London. After college she began to paint and write. She had always written poems and songs but now she started writing stories. Her first were in comic strip, a medium that she worked with for five years. The Sock Monsters was her first published book in 1995 - a comic strip story for 5 - 7 year olds. Georgia lives in a house in London full of old and new art, as her husband is the conceptual artist Marc Quinn. Marc keeps all sorts of strange things in the fridge - once he had to keep a Canadian frog in there as it was hibernating and had to be kept cold. They and their family, Tiger (17), Lucas (6) and Sky (2) love to travel, their favorite destination being India.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sequel to Past Editions, Stands Well on Own Too (Great for "Potter" Fans), November 30, 2005

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
"Molly Moon's Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure" is the third book in a series of adventures about a girl named Molly Moon and Georgia Byng delivers once again.

Hynpotic Time Travel Adventure picks up right where Stops the World left off. Molly has found her parents, but finds herself not entirely happy, for Lucy Logan seems to have sunk into a deep depression and Molly feels that her own inadequacy may be partly to blame. She's pondering starting up a hypnotic hospital with her good friend, Rocky, and wonders if maybe Logan should be her first patient. She doesn't have much time to dwell on this, however, as strange things are afoot.

Before she knows it, Molly finds first her dog, Petula, kidnaped and then herself. She's whisked back to India in 1870, where a strange man called Maharaja Waqt is upset that Molly has foiled his plans. It seems he's the one that was ultimately responsible for the events of the past book and now, using time travel power, he hopes to erase what Molly's done and further his own selfish schemes. He's largely unaware, however, just how powerful Molly is.

This book contains deep thoughts about friendship, self-worth, perseverance and even religion. I found myself really connecting with what Georgia Byng was saying, both about social systems and religion.

The Molly Moon books also have pretty well developed characters. While I feel the characters aren't quite as deep and well-developed as those of the Potter series (a very hard act to live up to), you can still connect with them and many of them are just plain cool (including the hippie Forest, who has a much larger role in this book than the previous.)

Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure lives up to the standard of the past books and is actually even better. Word has it now that work on a feature film has begun, with David Heyman, producer of the "Harry Potter" films on board to produce the movie. I can't wait for the next book as well, as the ending of this sets up a great cliffhanger for the next.

As you saw on the title,I like Molly Moon. If you like adventure, suspense and mystery, you should run to your nearest library and find the whole series. But you have to read the books in order or nothing will make sense. I can't imangine how anyone would not LOVE this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Molly Moon, February 19, 2006
A Kid's Review
After the exitment and scheme of the first book the third and second books were kind of a let-down.A lot of books do that and I find this book is no exeption. Same old story. Every time you think you have found the power crazed manic , you find out he has a master , a more power crazed manic than him/her.
