From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-These two earnest entries in the controlled-vocabulary category are moderately successful. Both stories support new readers through short sentences, text of nine or fewer lines per page, and no surprising vocabulary. Noise! presents two boys and a girl who drum, hum, and strum their families and their teacher to distraction. When the teacher suggests forming a band, the "Good Deals" are born. Molly tells about the frustrations of being the middle child in her family but comes to appreciate its special advantages. Molly looks older than the children in Noise!, which makes this title more appealing to the higher end of the target audience. The posed photographs, cropped so as to reveal no background, give the book plenty of white space. However, the winsome kids often look self-conscious, and these pictures are so clean, so antiseptic, that readers may feel like they should put on scrubs or wash up before reading these books.

Part of the Real Kids Readers series, which blends phonics and whole language, this introduces Molly, who doesn't enjoy being a middle child. So she decides that if she can't be the oldest or the youngest, she will be, first, the loudest; then, the funniest; then, the meanest. When none of these personae works, Molly's father tells her she can try being the oldest or youngest for a day. But Molly comes to see that there are disadvantages to both of those positions and decides to stay right in the middle. Kids will relate to Molly's dilemma in a story that is built around plot, not just a reading method. This series has a unique look: bright, cut-out photos of the characters are set against expanses of white; the text is longer than those found in many easy readers. Phonics guidelines appear at the book's conclusion, and there are also tips for parents on reading with their child using the phonics method.
