5.0 out of 5 stars Positive story about the courage of a horse and the people who rallied to support it, April 29, 2008
This review is from: Molly the Pony: A True Story (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent example of perseverance. Despite the many challenges for both the horse and all the people involved in the story everything works out for everyone. The people rally behind the horse to save it. It is a very uplifting and inspirational book. As a mother of two children I would definitely recommend this book. There are several positive life lessons that can be learned by all children who read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disabled Pony Overcomes Challenges, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Molly the Pony: A True Story (Hardcover)
Molly the pony was injured in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, but caring people worked to save her life. She lost a leg to infection that set in after she was attacked by a dog, but an LSU vet and a prosthetist helped her heal and walk again with an artificial leg. This simple account, complete with photographs, is a wonderful book for anyone, but especially for a child who faces difficulties because of being "different." In fact, it would be great for any child, disabled or not, to teach empathy and compassion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Molly the pony, August 24, 2008
This review is from: Molly the Pony: A True Story (Hardcover)
We purchased the books to donate to a local hospital's childrens department. This book shares the hardships of a brave little pony who worked with her doctors and owner to overcome a monumental medical problem. It goes on to show that even after the loss of her leg the other ponies still accepted her and and shows that she is still able to live a happy life. It's an inspiration for children facing major medical problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars What happened to the animals? Molly's story is just one...., May 12, 2010
This review is from: Molly the Pony: A True Story (Hardcover)
What happened to the people of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina? Many stayed. Many relocated elsewhere. Some returned. And the animals? "Molly the Pony: A True Story" is just one story of many. In this case Molly was left with the intention of the return of her owners.

Molly was a "lucky" pony. Her owners left her enough hay to last the two weeks she spent in a barn in isolation and lock-down after the hurricane was over. During the storm the wind blew off the roof, allowing rain to fall inside and provide enough water to last those two weeks. Her owners had locked the doors to keep Molly safe; the abundant hay was surely an unknowing miraculous act for Molly. If you will remember, various people from the New Orleans area immediately started search and rescue efforts for people and animals alike after the storm. Molly is just one story.

A nearby neighbor took in Molly until her owners could return. As with many, they chose to relocate. Molly became Ms Kay's new addition. The story could have ended here but would not be as interesting as what happened. A huge dog wandered into the pasture and attacked Molly, biting her severely on one front leg. The wound would not heal and Molly lost her leg. The cover picture reveals that Molly was fitted with a prothesis and learned to live with it (many horses could not). This still is not the end of a wonderful story.

The third phase of Molly's journey is her becoming a therapy horse--you know, like dogs and cats are. With the story of her own prothesis, Molly is taken to various homes and institutions where she touches lives of children and senior adults with their own disabilities.

I summarized this wonderful story so that readers will know what "Molly the Pony" is about and why this true story is so worthy of being part of everyone's library. Although it was written for children--my library students, 4- and 5-year-olds were so intrigued!, adults will also love this lesson in persistence, determination, and a dogged/horsed will to live. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, June 18, 2008

This review is from: Molly the Pony: A True Story (Hardcover)
This book a terrific TRUE story that facinated my 9 year old grandaughter who loves horses. I bought it to read to my 5-6 year-olds in my preschool classroom and they all loved the story as well. Pictures are large, real photos that all the children wanted to look at over and over. Thank you for such a great story that led to a lot of good discussion about older people in resthomes, helping others, our responsibility to care for animals, determination and strength to make the best of a tough situation and outcomes that can almost make things better than they were before....not to mention the disasterous flood that preceeded this story.

A wonderful story of how a pony, strangely abandoned in the throes of a horrific storm survives with a terrible infection. Her courage and strength as she is given a new chance at life is heart warming.

I read about Molly in a magazine and ordered the book for a 3rd grader whose right leg was removed because of cancer. I also ordered a copy for the school library. The part that said the other ponies touched her 'new leg' and then knew it was still their friend, Molly....wow!!! That is what happened at school. The students saw the 'new leg', said, 'WOW--it is purple." then the school day went on!!! I LOVE this book and hope to meet Molly one day!

This is the incredible story of Molly, a Pony of the Americas, who survived for 2 weeks with no care after Hurricane Katrina. Then she was rescued and taken to a farm, where she was attacked by a brutal dog. Her leg had to be removed. She was fitted with a prosthetic device--complete with a smiley face on the bottom of her "hoof." She was very patient while she was fitted. Now she goes to nursing homes and children's homes and brings a smile to their faces. It brought tears to my eyes. I love the pictures too. What a magnificent story!!
