Book Description

4 and upP and up
It’s the first day of kindergarten, and Molly is worried. She’s never been on a school bus, and she’s afraid she won’t know what to do. What if she has to sit with a big kid? Her mom assures her that big kids are nice, and riding the bus is fun. But Molly’s not so sure. She brings her bear, Willy, along for comfort.

On the bus there are so many new faces. Molly walks down the aisle to an empty seat, only to discover that Willy is gone! Suddenly, she sees him flying through the air. Tossed from seat to seat, Willy finally ends up in the lost-and-found box. An older girl, named Ruby, fishes him out and returns him to Molly. During the rest of the ride, Ruby and Molly talk, laugh, and listen to music. Molly decides that big kids are nice and riding the school bus is fun.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reschool-Kindergarten--It is Molly's first day of kindergarten and she is worried about riding the bus with all the big kids. Mom reassures her and sends her off with her bear and a hug, but she drops the stuffed toy before she finds an empty seat. After a few tosses in the air, it ends up in the lost-and-found box, where it is rescued by one of the older children and returned to Molly. Illustrated rules for riding the bus and a page that labels the driver's section conclude the book. Brillhart's story is a little different from the usual "first day of kindergarten" offerings, since it ends at the front door before classes begin. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations clearly show Molly's feelings and the ethnic diversity of the school. However, they are very busy, including extraneous details, and the text is sometimes on top of the color, making it difficult to read. In addition, the text is a bit long for preschool listeners.

This review is from: Molly Rides the School Bus (Library Binding)
I read this story before my daughter started kindergarten & she was going to take the bus. It reasuured her that riding the bus isn't that scary & that the bigger kids are just kids going to school just like she is. It's now one of her favorites.
