This book is one of the oddest I have ever read. It qualifies as science-fiction in only the broadest sense of the word. The sub-genre of apocalyptic future fiction would be a much more apt category for it.The entire narrative is written in secon-person, as in "You are walking... you stand up." The narrator (you) is a young girl being raised in an institutional enviornment meant to foster her for a career within the society's elite ranks. When she runs away, the book take off in a spiraling Alice in Wonderlandesque journey that carries you thorough a society whose rules are as vague as its inhabitants. The most thrilling aspect of this book is its novel narrative structure that will cause its reader to re-evaluate entirely the way one reads any book hereafter. Highly recommended! |
