In the 1880's, the Irish immigrants in Pennsylvania formed a protective association. They called it the Sons of Molly Maguire. Soon, people simply called them the "Molly Maguires". Initially, they tried to use their association as a sort of union to protect the interests of Irish Americans. Eventually, they resorted to violence. Violence brought the police into the picture. The Molly Maguires were rounded up and tried. However, among the Irish, there has always been talk of the 'Mollys' rising and remaining active well into the middle of the 20th century. Are the Molly Maguires alive and well today? One wonders.
