Pro Touch vs. Super Touch,
By naofel (The Emerald City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Molten Super Touch NCAA Japanese Leather Volleyball (Misc.)
The Super Touch was my favorite ball two years ago. Now, I find myself wishing for a cross between the Pro Touch and the Super Touch just because the Super Touch is a little on the light side and the leather seems to get a little slippery and breaks down sooner than the Pro. The Pro Touch will last longer because the cover is resilient and the ball has an almost pigskin-like grip that sort of grows on you. It offers more in terms of substance when it comes to playability as well. Pro Touch balls are not really for everyone though. If you or your teammates don't have healthy shoulders, rotator cuffs, and correct armswing mechanics, the Super Touch is probably a wise bet until you develop those things. Super Touch balls are not that heavy but are at least more substantial and requiring of good form than, say for instance, the Tachikara SV5W Gold (an all-time favorite of many players).
In short: Super Touch (NCAA or USAV versions) are good all-around balls. Guys and gals can both play with them at a competitive level. The Tachikara is often the setter's favorite ball (it is very forgiving) and if you are coaching young players, they will probably have fun with it if you have not instead opted for any of the Lite balls. If you are playing rec, the Tachikara is still probably your best bet. If you are more than just a little hardcore, you probably don't need the advice (and you'd probably choose the Pro Touch).

I've played at the college level and can't stand using the plastic pillows most people bring to pick-up games. This ball is the perfect "in-betweener" ball that offers accuracy and speed w/out the newbie pain.

I play in a fairly competitive volleyball league and most people use the Tachikaras. I thought I'd try something a little different and I'm glad I did. The Molten Super Touch has a very satisfying smack when I hit the ball. It's stiffer than a Tachikara, which now feels squishy. I think setters prefer Tachies over the Moltens, but as an outside hitter I'm pretty happy with my new ball.
