Great Learning Resource,

This review is from: Mom, Can You Buy Me This? (Paperback)
I found both of the titles in this series to be an excellent resource in helping to teach my children about finance and fiscal responsibility. I especially liked how the author presents what many kids might consider to be a dull topic in engaging fictional stories that both entertain and educate. As a concerned and caring father I'd love to see some Dad, Can you Buy Me this? titles. The series gets two thumbs up from this Dad!

I wish I had read this book when I was a kid! I gave my nieces this book for the holidays because I wanted something that was educational as well as fun. The girls were skeptical at first, but we were soon all delighted by the book. It is written in hip, kid-savvy lingo that helps them understand finance, and enjoy it! I strongly recommend this book as a guilt-free gift that will make kids, parents, and aunts very happy.

Kathryn Durham's Mom, Can You Buy Me This?, is a great way to teach children about fiscal responsibility. There are two titles in this series Ryan Gets An Allowance and Richard Gets A Job. In today's ever changing economy, children need to learn to be financially responsible at an early age. Durham uses characters such as Mr. Tax to teach children about the importance of paying taxes. Its an entertaining as well and educational read for children, Durham does a great job bringing the this seemingly difficult information down to a level where children can understand it. Parents might even learn a thing or two! The book also has word problems at the end of each chapter, so children can test out what they learned. I would recommend this book to all parents.

Pleased,
This review is from: Mom, Can You Buy Me This? (Paperback)
I am very pleased with the educational book, Mom Can You Buy Me This? Ryan Gets An Allowance, by Kathryn Durham. It is a fun book written from the child's perspective, making it the perfect learning tool for my son. It's as though my child is Ryan's friend and he is shopping with him.
Ryan Gets An Allowance is educational and entertaining. The humor in the book brings my son and me to smiles and laughs. When Ryan stops conversing with his `Mom' and thinks to himself, it is the funniest part of the story. At one point, Ryan states, "This game is only twenty four dollars and tax can't be that much. I paid less than that for roads." `Mom' is also quite the character. She uses just the right amount of wit and humor to get her point across. My child can really relate to this book. Ryan is just like my son. The prices Ryan has to pay for games are the same he has to pay. The numbers are realistic, which puts everything in perspective for the reader. It's great! And the section on bank accounts really hit `home'. It was good for my son to see such a real example of the importance of starting to save money at an early age. Another great aspect of the book is that it is user friendly. The word problems are put together very simply. My son was able to read the book and fill in the blanks on his own. I could tell right then and there that he was learning. Ryan Gets An Allowance was written to educate on matters of finance, but the book touches on other areas of maturity as well. The book helps reinforce to children that it is good to take responsibility. When Ryan compares getting his allowance and saving his money to buy a new game, to becoming a man, it encouraged my child to be responsible and embrace growing up. There are so many positive messages all throughout this educational and entertaining book. I highly recommend it to any parent that breaks the budget every time there little ones tag along and ask for the newest this and the coolest that. |
