More About the Author

Linda A. Born worked for twenty-two years as a first grade teacher, and implemented a special program for children with reading challenges. She is a farm wife and is the primary caregiver for her mother, who has dementia.

Linda's first book, My Mom Has Alzheimer's, provides empathy and support for caregivers and families of those who require care, whether as a result of a dementia related illness or some other need. Her novel, The Children Are Tender, is a rollicking account of a young woman's first year of teaching in the lovable but eccentric community of Karola, Kansas.

Linda lives in a yellow farmhouse in Kansas with her husband, Farmer John.

This book helped me to understand and appreciate the huge responsibility that has been taken on by a family member who is caring for her mother with Alzheimer's. I appreciated the honesty about the caregiver's role and the disease process. I also thought that the caregiver suggestions and guidance were ingenious. PLUS I really appreciated the humor. It was so nice to be able to feel, learn, AND smile. My favorite part of the book was when she was talking about how her mother didn't want to be confrontational so she would talk ABOUT the caregiver to Poky the cat. The thing was, the caregiver was still right there! How does one respond to that? I mean afterall, she wasn't talking to her was she? She was talking to the cat. :-) Thanks for writing this book.

Linda's book was exactly what I needed to see myself more clearly. I am going through the steps of care giving but needed to step back and find the humor while recognizing God's ever present support. I like the idea of reading a small piece daily and thinking about that insight throughout the day. My mom and I both appreciate the wisdom in Linda's words.

I enjoyed reading this book and walking the journey with Linda as she learned to care for her mother. Turning to the Bible and finding lessons in so many unlikely scriptures, I am inspired by her insight. I am posting this book on my blog caregiversunite.org as a great idea for a Christmas gift.

This is such an inspirational, faith-filled book. Alzheimer's disease often brings despair and sorrow, but this book beautifully expresses how there can be hope (and sometimes humor) on the journey of caregiving. One aspect that sets this book apart from other texts on Alzheimer's disease is that it includes writings from the Alzheimer patient. Five years into her journey through Alzheimer's disease, the author's mother continues to record her perceptions of the world and her prayers to God. These touching and intriguing snippets are included throughout the text. I highly recommend this book, not only to caregivers but to anyone who wants their faith strengthened and their spirits revived!

Although I am not an Alheimter's caregiver, I read this book seeking understanding for loved ones who are. Born offers a window into both her Mother's and her own life as both learn to live in their world made unique by Alzheimer's. She shares honestly about facing the lions ~ sometimes giggling as their threatening growls turn to head-twisting looks of confusion ~ while gazing steadfastly heavenward for guidance and encouragement. Her mother's own words make it clear one living with this disease continues to have meaningful thoughts and wise insights, mixed with what I had thought of as typical Alheimer's eccentricities. I would recommend this book to any who wish to learn more about living life to it's fullest in the face of adversity ~ whether Alzheimer's Disease or other life-changing circumstances.
