Book Description

In 1997, Shari Lichtenstein, M.S.W., a social worker at Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood, IL) authored a book entitled My Mom Has Cancer. This children’s book has helped many families begin to cope with and understand the changes that a family undergoes when their mother is diagnosed with cancer. The book is written from the viewpoint of "Dan," a ten year old boy whose mother has cancer. Each page includes a drawing by a child of one of her patients. These drawings represent each child’s strong feelings about the experience of having a mom with cancer. The drawings are uses as another way for children to see that there are, in fact, others whose mothers have cancer, and that the feelings they may be experiencing are similar to those of kids their own age. It is both educational and heartwarming, and with the emerging focus on the value of family and support systems, this is a much-needed book for both family members and health care professionals.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is not merely a children's book but one for adults as well. It can be an experience that parent and child share together; one that encourages communication, while serving as a vehicle for the child to safely share the emotiional turmoil he feels. These feelings need to be validated so the child is secure enough to deal with the parent's cancer. This book encourages this type of communication. -- The Author
