Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As with most anthologies, this collection of three Mother's Day novellas is a mixed bag. The premise of all three is that Alonzo Clark, a popular radio talk/music show host, is running a Mother's Day contest that will give the winning single mom (entries must be submitted by the entrant's offspring) a day at a spa, a shopping spree, and a blind date with a local eligible bachelor. The stories are set in New York, North Carolina, and Michigan. Savoy's tale puts Alonzo himself together with a woman who works in his building and has a remarkable son who has uncovered Alonzo's fatherly instincts. Jacquelin Thomas' tale of a long-divorced couple who have a 14-year-old paraplegic son has lots of interesting bits, but the pacing is off. The final tale, a charming and captivating one by Karen White-Owens, has the children of a conscientious schoolteacher and a bereaved lawyer conspiring to get their parents together. 4.0 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Single Moms, May 28, 2003

This review is from: To Mom, With Love: Fairy Godfather\The Price Of A Mother's Love\A Mother For Scott (Arabesque) (Hardcover)
TO MOM, WITH LOVE is a heartwarming and romantic collection of three novellas dedicated to single mothers. The Alonzo Clark Morning Show has decided to sponsor a special Mother's Day contest, in which three special single moms will win a makeover, shopping spree and blind date. Children are asked to write letters about their mother and why they deserve to win the contest and the winners are selected on the basis of the letters. Each of the three stories follows this same general theme as authors Deirdre Savoy, Jacquelin Thomas, and Karen White-Owens add their own unique spin on the story line. The three novellas are interesting and take the same general story line in three totally different directions. Check out this creative tribute for a pleasant and enjoyable read.

Of the three stories, I thought White-Owens' story "A Mother for Scott" was the most creative because of its initial focus on the relationship between a father and son. As the story progresses the author even incorporates a little supernatural flair, which is believable and fun. Thomas' story, "The Price of a Mother's Love," reminds readers that it is never too late for true love and it will touch your heart and bring tears to your eyes. It tells of a character named Kree, who gave up her marriage to raise her younger siblings after the tragic death of their parents. "Fairy Godfather," the story by Deirdre Savoy, shows how sometimes falling in love is just meant to be. When Alonzo Clark participates in his own contest, he is paired up with a woman that works in the same building, fate takes over and each of their plans for the date, and, indeed, their respective futures, are dramatically changed.

This review is from: To Mom, With Love: Fairy Godfather\The Price Of A Mother's Love\A Mother For Scott (Arabesque) (Hardcover)
In Arabesque's "To Mom, With Love" we are treated to the stories of authors Deirdre Savoy, Jacquelin Thomas, and Karen White-Owens as they explore the lives and loves of three single mothers. The unifying theme of the anthology is based on a local radio station's Mother's Day Makeover/Spa Day/Blind Date Contest for single mothers. In each story, the child of the single mother submits a letter to radio show host Alonzo Clark on why their mother is deserving to win the contest.

Deirdre Savoy's tale focuses on Clark himself, who has become the target of the son of a single mother working in his building. This is an interesting tale, with a classic romance story happy-ending.

The second story of the anthology focuses on a divorced couple. The tale of the couple and their disabled, teenage son is a potential tear jerker, but never truly takes off and fulfills its potential. This was the weakest story in a lighthearted, fun anthology.

In the final story by Karen White-Owens, we see two scheming kids team up to get their mom, a caring schoolteacher, and dad, an overworked lawyer, together. This story was delightful.

Based on the strength of Savoy and White-Owen's stories, I would recommend this as an enjoyable Mother's Day read.
