Editorial Reviews

Review

"The youngest of readers are in for a delicious treat that will take them around the world without ever leaving the kitchen.... From the bouncing rhythm of the writing it is clear that Gomes enjoys playing with language as much as her characters love eating food." (Canadian Bookseller 2006-09-01)

About the Author

Filomena Gomes has a passion for language, culture, writing and teaching. This is her first children’s book. She lives in Calgary, Alberta with her husband, David, and their three children, Madeleine, Zachary and Éva Simone. She loves them all more than sushi.

Ashley Spires has illustrated two previous books, but this is the first one to make her hungry while she drew it. She lives in Richmond, British Columbia, with her cats, Gracie and Charlotte, and her favorite foods are strawberries, nectarines and chocolate.

For one little girl and her mother, cooking together is a joy. Especially since they choose to cook foods from many different parts of the world. Although they love to be in the kitchen together, they both know that their love for each other far surpasses these delightful treats.

Together they make sushi, biscotti, houska, canja, couscous, megadarra, smorgastarta, crepes, jambalaya, and samosas.

This is a great bedtime story to introduce children to new foods from around the world. Hopefully, once they see the colorful illustrations and hear some of the ingredients of these new foods, they might even want to try them! Well, we can only hope.

Thought this was cute book that introduces different types of food from a variety of cultures. Would recommend to for toddlers and up. May be this will help combat future pickiness at the dinner table : )

A relative gave this book to my 3-year old daughter for Christmas, and it has become one of her favorite books at bedtime. She will routinely ask, "Where's my sushi book?" The illustrations are creative and depict funny scenes with food, people, and pets. The storyline is simple and teaches kids about different foods and the concept of origin. I like how the book concludes with a mosaic of the foods, which you can use to test the child's memory.

Written by Filomena Gomes and illustrated by Ashley Spires, My Mom Loves Me More Then Sushi is a picturebook about a mother and daughter who enjoy making and sharing tasty specialty foods from around the world. From sushi to couscous to crepes and jambalaya, each dish is a delight to create, but the greatest delight lies in the loving bond between mother and daughter. Whimsical color illustrations add a festive touch to this celebration of flavors and family love.
