Book Description

0072347740 978-0072347746 May 28, 1999 1
This book is a collection of essays by the authors, plus selections from contributors such as Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams,Cathy Young,John Leo, and Camille Paglia. It is applicable as a text or supplement in introductory or small business courses, and courses in economics, business law, women's studies/law, and political science. It also is an ideal resource for small business programs. The book demonstrates how overly intrusive government can turn the American dream of owning a small business into a nightmare. Drawing on both their academic expertise and firsthand experiences as owners of a small business, the authors combine a groundbreaking intellectual analysis with Mainstreet true-life stories to illustrate the absurdities of big government.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ralph Reiland and Sarah McCarthy are delightfully wise and articulate spokesmen for America's hardworking, common sense tradition --- combining literary zip, entrepreneurial smarts, and middle class values in one incredibly refreshing package. They've got a vigorous grasp on the principles that make our country great, and pens sharp enough to bring them to life." -- Karl Zinsmeister, Editor-in-Chief, The American Enterprise

"Ralph Reiland and Sarah McCarthy have produced a body of work that is going to make American small-business owners stand up and cheer. I was cheering while I read through this book...it was like seeing your favorite team play their best. Every shot is all net, every rebound strong, and every steal satisfying. Reiland and McCarthy are refreshing for their common-sense views, and they are downright inspiring for their intellectual approach to policy positions. .....

In this book, they have identified the foolishness of big government and pinned it to the wall with solid arguments, true stories, and a writing style that is intellectual without being pedantic." -- Jack Faris, President, National Federation of Independent Business

"Reiland and McCarthy ferret out a fascinating variety of abuses of the American citizenry by government. Like free market detectives they expose the seamy underside of the control freaks in legislatures and bureaucracies, always in an entertaining and insightful manner." -- Edward Hudgins, Director of Regulatory Studies, The Cato Institute

"THIS BOOK SHOULD BE ON EVERY CONGRESSMAN'S DESK --- RIGHT NEXT TO THE CONSTITUTION." -- Rep. Jim DeMint, U.S. Congress. Insight magazine, September, 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should be required reading for every voter!, November 3, 1999

Really enjoyed the book! Even though I knew that the government hates business and success, especially out here in the People's Republic of California, the book was still an eye-opener. This book should be required reading for every voter and politician. (If even half the voters and politicians read this book, America would be a much better, more prosperous place.) Definitely a job well done!

I just hope a sequel isn't necessary!

5.0 out of 5 stars You want to know about small business, this book has it!, September 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mom & Pop vs. the Dreambusters (Paperback)
Ralph Reiland is one of my professors at Robert Morris College. He uses this book in class and all the students love it. Any other text book would just give you definitions and lame reviews. Not Mom & Pop vs. the Dreambusters, it gives you the REAL WORLD look at things. This book gives you the street smarts needed to survive in this world. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about owning their own small business. Thank you Ralph for all that you have taught me.
