4.0 out of 5 stars luminous Chet Baker sound - lovers will listen!
Roy Hargrove has taken a page from early Miles Davis, but moreso from early Chet Baker. Also from Stan Getz. That is, to concentrate first on sound, on the beauty of the notes. He blows sweet well formed, luminous tones which put me in mind of Chet with strings. Staying close to the melodic line.

After all, if the first note doesn't sound good, it doesn't matter how...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but not Startlingly Beautiful as it could be
The trumpeter for the current times is called ROY HARGROVE. I am a big fan of his work despite marketing effort to sell alternative artists. So that this CD brings me the sensation that Verve tried to lesser production costs when not authorizing a major string arranger like Legrand or Sebesky or Mandel to do what they know how to do at their best - to write string...

After all, if the first note doesn't sound good, it doesn't matter how many notes follow. More Jazz musicians should heed his example.

This CD is standards with lush orchestral romantic arrangements behind him, which some purists may say isn't Jazzy enough, but I predict the warm sound will be popular with lovers of all ages. In fact, on the first day of it's release, I'll go out on a limb and predict a best seller for these who like Chet Baker, early Miles Davis, and Diana Krall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seising the moment!, July 11, 2000

This review is from: Moment to Moment (Audio CD)
This is the first Roy Hargrove recording I have ever listened to or purchased. I really wished I would have heard of him before this. But maybe that is good. As a new disciple of the jazz genre, I can truly say that this is one for the archives. All the selections are true ballads and neither selection is one to be bypassed for the other. Each tune has it's own identity and meaning, but yet speaks volumes for the completeness of this piece of work. It has an aura all it's own and with the exception of the ballads laid down by Coltrane, I cannot say I have heard anything this beautiful. I would stronly recommend this to anyone looking for the complete jazz ballad cd. This is awesome. I am now a Roy Hargrove fan for life.

4.0 out of 5 stars In A Word....WOW!, February 5, 2002
This review is from: Moment to Moment (Audio CD)
This was my first Roy Hargrove CD, and I actually bought it because I'm taking my wife to see him in two weeks here in Seattle.

I was completely amazed at this man's skill for playing the trumpet, both that and the Flugel Horn he REALLY makes sing!

From the first track, "You Go To My Head" to the last note of "Another Time" this CD is pure mellow mood and prowess personified. Now I have to get back to the musci store and collect his other works to go with this one.

Roy, I'll the one downfront on the 26th cheering and clapping! Plan to play, You Go To My Head! That track is a TRUE stunner!
Even if this man doesn't play your local Jazz club, get this CD...light a candle....and just relax in the mood...Momemt To Moment!

--E.B.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush Life, February 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Moment to Moment (Audio CD)
Here's a beautiful collection of ballads by Roy Hargrove. Caution: This CD is not for everyday use; rather, it is intended to remind you of sweeping, lush landscapes of life...memories of how wonderful it felt to be in love...hopelessly, madly and passionately. It speaks of candlelight, dinner for two, starlight, and all of the things one might hold as sacred and so dear. For one hour, it allows you to escape the responsibilities and complexities of everyday life.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush, Lovely and Mellow, December 27, 2001

This review is from: Moment to Moment (Audio CD)
If you want to get mellow, this is the CD to listen to. It will wash away all of your troubles. What I really like about this CD is the excellent string section. Not just a couple of violins and a cello, but a 14 piece chamber orchestra with a deep, rich, lush sound that just melts away the dissonance from your vibration. Roy's playing on this date is impeccable. He generates a pure, clear tone and doesn't miss a note. The playing is very expressive, but subtle to match the music.
Listening to this CD is like connecting up with a source of light that refreshes and soothes you.
Every cut is excellent, it is well worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Answered Prayers, December 25, 2000

At times reminiscent of Clifford Brown, other times of Miles... but always beautiful, original and compelling. What a gift we have in Roy Hargrove -- the answer to this music lover's prayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, March 5, 2007

This review is from: Moment to Moment (Audio CD)
I have a couple of Roy Hargrove CDs now and I think he's gifted. I especially like the way he tries out different ideas from straight ahead jazz, like The RH Factor "HardGroove" project, for instance, where he collaborated with popular hip-hop and neo soul artistes.

I think this is another great idea that has worked really well. Backed by the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra, Hargrove's horn, (whether trumpet or flugelhorn), blends in nicely with Sherman Irby's alto saxophone and with their trio, made up of Larry Willis on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass and Willie Jones, III on drums, they cruise through a set of standards that are dreamy. This is the kind of music I enjoy listening to while driving long distances at night. It is relaxing enough to make the journey pleasant and stress-free but challenging enough to ensure I stay awake and alert.

Favourite tunes are the Coots/Gillespie standard "You Go To My Head", the fantastic Pat Metheny classic "Always And Forever", the Hargrove-penned "Natural Wonders", the Jobim standard "How Insensitive", "Peri", written by Gerald Cannon and "Another Time", written by Willie Jones, III.

These are just my favourite standouts though. I love the entire album and hope Hargrove does more of this in the future. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Trumpet, November 29, 2005

I have dozens of albums in my car, but Moment to Moment finds its way to my cd player more often than any other album. The quality of Hargrove's trumpet is the best one could ask for. The musical choices are perfect for producing a contemplative mood. I could never part with this work. Every piece is a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush Life continued....., July 3, 2000

This is strings and jazz, plain and simple. All ballads in slow tempo with lush strings over soft piano voicings. The alto sax and Hargrove play improved melodic lines over the strings/piano. Drums are soft and scarce, with the bass walking slowly. Nice dinner music, music to relax to, or music to reflect to.
