Book Description

April 26, 2002 Live Girls
There’s a thin line between love and hate, or infatuation and disdain. Every woman can identify with the “moment of truth”—that flash of lucidity and horror that her date laughs like a horse, that her mate loves the underwear-eating dog more than she. The joys of living alone are confirmed by every story of lying, cheating, oblivious, messy, inconsiderate exes. One woman discovers the in-the-flesh odors of her Internet lover prove too much to bear: “So there I was, trying to be sensual, focusing a great deal of attention on her breasts, which had become a scent-free oasis. It was a moment of startling clarity—when good lesbians smell bad.” Another finds her date’s pace problematic: “He nibbled my lips then a nanosecond later was standing before me wearing nothing but his socks. He triumphantly placed one foot on the couch, leaving the other on the floor. ‘Aren’t you going to say anything about how big it is?’ he inquired, nodding to the place his boxers had been just moments ago.” These women grew up knowing they didn’t need a partner in order to be complete, but in the name of love, sex, or something in between, they gave it a go anyway—with riotous results. A collection of pithy confessions that could make even Bridget Jones stop looking for a mate, The Moment of Truth helps put all those romantic disasters into perspective.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In Beck's compilation, "moment of truth" refers to the flash of intuition that lets a woman know that the affair is over, kaput, a wash. In these testimonies, the comic, the sad, and the rueful mix in situations readers may find all too familiar. One relationship's beginning and ending were defined by the unfortunate fellow's severe flatulence, which, unfortunately, appeared as an ill-fated harbinger only in retrospect. An Internet lesbian match seemed the stuff of opera until the two met in the malodorous flesh. Our plucky heroine struggled politely to, uh, overcome her ardent visitor's particularly pungent areas by focusing strategically on her breasts, only to be lauded for turning foreplay into high art, thereby rendering her yet more desirable to her unwashed inamorata, who spent several days panting for more, without ever showering. Sometimes a braying laugh unnerves, sometimes a be-rhinestoned shirt a la Liberace stuns. Always, the disappointment and the regret beneath the laughter make the humor universal. Whitney Scott

The stories in this book are funny, eye-opening and will make you happy to have a great boyfriend (if you are one half of a couple) or happy to be single (if you were feeling depressed about being solo). From dates who wear the same clothes all the time to smelly, sloppy girlfriends to boyfriends caught in bed with another man, this book has several funny stories that probably any woman can relate to in some way or another.
