Review

Moments that Matter: Real Life Photography Techniques for Capturing the Wonder of Family Life lives up to its title with easy-to-follow guidelines for photographers of all skill and experience levels. Professional photographer and mother of three Farrah Braniff offers tips, tricks, and techniques for capturing timeless moments, especially with regard to one's family and playful children. "I always look for bright light with a little bit of cover... The little bit of cover keeps people from needing to squint their eyes and it helps you avoid the split lighting look that happens when you are in the direct sunshine." Parents and grandparents especially will delight in the improved quality photographs they can take with the helpful advice of Moments that Matter! Highly recommended.

The Midwest Book Review's for MTM as October Photography feature:

About the Author

Farrah Braniff began her career as a photographer on the side of the road when her father showed her how to take long exposure images of the night sky. While studying visual arts at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas, photography became her passion and the darkroom her sanctuary. After receiving her BFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute, she eventually returned to Texas, worked as a photography teacher, and opened her eponymous studio, where she specializes in capturing images that will hold their meaning through the years, bring back a flood of memories, and let the children featured in them know that they were loved. She teaches popular workshops in California and in Houston, where she lives with her husband and their three children, some of her best subjects.

I have the camera, and I don't have the knowledge to go with it.

This book is awesome to add to that. It's like being in the classroom with an amazing teacher.

Amazingly, a lot of photo how-to books don't actually look great, which is ironic, and this one is laid out beautifully on top of the practicality of the info.

Haven't put it down.

The book was technically helpful and it also inspired me to start taking pictures again. It seemed to be written for family photographers - like parents and grandparents. The book is easy to read. It's not just a 'how to' book, it is a fun read. The examples are totally understandable. For the first time, all those little dials and numbers get explained in a way that allowed me to say "Okay, I get it". The book is full of charming pictures that illustrate what the author wants you to practice and use to take pictures of your own special moments.

I'm a beginner in photography and this was a good and easy book to follow and get the basics down. She offers information for more advanced as well, but good at the beginners level. She offers "homework" at the end of each chapter to help drive in the information. I even took her class afterwards which was helpful as well.

I took a small group class with Farrah and this book is a great summary/reinforcement of the topics she covers in the class. Great for understanding "why" & "how" you get good shots.
