5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Hackett solo gem, May 2, 2003
This review is from: Momentum (Audio CD)
Momentum is an absolute gem of a record â€" mostly classical solo guitar, but also a number of tracks with keyboard and flute. It’s mainly quiet music, perfect for Sunday mornings or as harmonious background music for when your parents come and visit. Genes is fans will delight in Steve's exquisite acoustic work, much of which is reminiscent of his Wind and Wuthering period (Blood on the Rooftops, Unquiet Slumber for the Sleepers). Great compositions (Concert for Munich is a stunner) beautifully played. Romantic stuff...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Guitar since invention, January 14, 2000

Hackett has captured so many pictures, ideas, landscapes, emotions, and more in just the simple strumming of a classical acoustic guitar. Combined with his brother on flute in Calvacanti he expresses such deep sentiments that only composers such as himself can realize. A true master of the art, this CD brings him to another level altogether.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Bay of Kings, you'll like this one, June 18, 2001

A good follow up to Bay of Kings (in fact, this one and Bay of Kings makes a very good 2 CD set). Very mellow, original classical style music from a great guitarist. Hackett has such a feel for all styles of guitar and is successful in this effort in communicating his love for music and his instrument. Simple production ... just the guitar and a few complementary instruments ... only a master musician could pull it off. Hackett does.

I really like Hackett's progressive/electric side, but I am appreciating more his versatility of late. If you only like the harder/progressive side of Hackett or if you have no love for classical guitar, don't get this one.

If you like very good original classical style guitar, try this one for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully recorded, January 4, 2000

This is a CD for those who love classical guitar and are hungry to hear new compositions that give a different "sound" to the instrument. Steve's playing is very relax and the result is a sensitive recording.

First Let me say, I am new to Hackett's classical Albums. The material is deftly executed in a formal-classical style. However... I found myself wanting to like this album but just can't warm up to it. The Peices just seem to elegantly meandor around the place to muct. For me they have no center and "story". If it were not the fine Craftsmenship of this album I wouldn't have given 4 stars. When "Bouree" (12) came along finally something with a mealody and I recognized... It's Like very English County Gentalmen modern classical music, played with tightly cliched feelings in place and check... Kind of stiff with beatifull passages that don't stand out any more than any other. Flat. But read between the lines here if that doesn't bother you, look at all the compliments I gave it considering for others taste. I think it deserves that. I do like Steve's Fusion work that he does. And own a couple of the DVD concerts. They are very good and interesting with great excerpts of Old Genesis Tunes worked in.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful classical guitar, November 18, 2009

this album is quietly gorgeous. with Steve's brother John adding bits to the mix on flute, it is a luscious tapestry of classical guitar originals that is best listened to deep in a december night with a fire in the fireplace. i have always appreciated Steve's adherence to classical forms, and his mirroring of Segovia in his playing. i actually like this material better than some of his "fusion" stuff which does not always suit me. this album ventures into some of the quieter realms that are found on Voage of the Acolyte, Steve's first solo album, a fine example of prog rock with heady classical influence. i adore Momentum, and will gladly say that this is worth the money.
