5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!
If you're looking for a book on how precious babies are and how complete a woman feels once she's given birth, this is not your book. But, if you're someone who feels alienated by books like that and have been looking for the antidote to pedantic parenting guides and new mommy chick lit, look no furthur. 2.0 out of 5 stars A dissapointment
I expected this book to be funny, but other than a few hints at humour I didn't find anything to laugh about. The book had little to do on a take on motherhood and had too many diversions to other topics. It could very aptly have been titled something else.

But, if you're someone who feels alienated by books like that and have been looking for the antidote to pedantic parenting guides and new mommy chick lit, look no furthur. This book is hilarious and so relatable. During my first few years of parenting I thought I never find a kindred spirit. Someone who didn't want to solely discuss the ins and outs of potty training and preschools, someone who understood the difference between Sauza and Tres Generations. Well, this is that person. I just need to make her my friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny, September 3, 2006

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It literally made me laugh out loud several times. In fact, I lost track of how many times. My husband kept asking me what was funny.

This is a memoir where parts feel a bit exaggerated, but are hilarious nonetheless. The supposed main subject: Brett (the author's) coming to grips with motherhood, struggling to hold onto her pre-baby self, and remaining her own woman with ideas and thoughts independent of motherhood. Yet a lot of it is about the bizarreness of raising a child in Hollywood: preschool auctions where face lifts and breast jobs are up for grabs, getting "points" to get into competitive magnet schools, and there is a priceless scene where she and her husband get stoned out of boredom at her in-laws' and end up raiding their children's Christmas stockings.

This is motherhood at its irreverent best.

5.0 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down!, December 30, 2006
I really loved this book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Funny, touching, shocking, just a fabulous read about one woman's struggles to re-find herself after becoming a mom. If you love your kids desperately AND sometimes think parenthood is driving you towards insanity, buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Kind of Funny!, March 3, 2007
I really don't understand why in the world some of the reviewers expected this to be a serious book about motherhood. Just look at the cover. Duh! It's a tongue-in-cheek book about motherhood. I have to wonder if the critical reviewers have kids because if they have kids and not a sense of humor they're really missing the best part.

If you're reading this, please don't be swayed by the negative reviews. I actually listened to the book (read by the author) and she is a fabulous reader. I plan on buying this book for my girlfriends and our youngest kids are 24! Doesn't that tell you something?

5.0 out of 5 stars RIGHT ON THE MONEY!, February 24, 2007
Brett Paesel is truly up there with the best of the many "confession-charged" writers. Often wry, always quick-witted, MOMMIES WHO DRINK confirms what many mothers often think and feel, but are too ashamed or fearful to admit--that having babies doesn't disqualify us from the world of the living, and alot of us don't always know what we're doing, let alone why! A great read and a perfect gift for another deserving mom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!, January 14, 2011

I read this book as part of my book club, and I have to say I really enjoyed reading it. I identified myself with some parts of the book as well I didn't like some of things she will do. I guess everybody has their own way to see motherhood :) I do recommend to all mommies out there, it's worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally the truth comes out...., July 4, 2008
This review is from: Mommies Who Drink: Sex, Drugs, and Other Distant Memories of an Ordinary Mom (Paperback)
This book was a great read. Brett shares the feelings so many of us have bottled up inside after becoming mothers. Who are we now? What is our new identity and how do we connect that to our old selves? I'm going to share this book with my other "mommy" friends.

This review is from: Mommies Who Drink: Sex, Drugs, and Other Distant Memories of an Ordinary Mom (Paperback)
From the first chapter, 'Mommies Who Drink' will have you in tears. It isn't as bad as the title sounds. It is the ongoing saga of a mother coming to grips with her new life. The changes that she has gone through and the longing for her past when that is no longer possible, and then coming to the realization that she is happy with her new self. From the pregnancy yoga classes, to the playdates from hell, and beyond. The discussions with her friends at happy hour derive the title. I am a dad and have read this out loud with my wife, I can see some of the same changes in her too. There is some colorful language, but I don't think you would be disappointed in this read.
