The simple text covers important aspects of breastfeeding and is enhanced by hand drawn, colorful pictures. While suitable for preschool and young school-age children, parents can also benefit from it.

The illustrations depict good interplay between the older sibling and baby, suggesting ways the older child can be helpful. Breastfeeding is explained as a natural and special way to feed the baby; the presentation should reassure older children that both mother and father will have special times for them. The father's participation is encouraged by showing him helping with the older child and assisting in bathing and diapering the new baby. Illustrations demonstrate his support for breastfeeding, including one in which he brings the baby to the family bed. Pictures of children from other nations and of suckling baby animals emphasize the universality of breastfeeding.

Information regarding breastfeeding in public or while traveling is included and it emphasizes the baby's portability.

About the Author

Teresa P. Carroll is a Registered Dietitian and International Certified Lactation Consultant. She earned her B.S. and M.S. Degrees from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She has worked as a dietitian, hospital lactation consultant and state lactation consultant for the Alabama Department of Public Health. In 1993, she received a "Certificate of Recognition" from the Governor of the State of Alabama for initiating the state breastfeeding plan which led to a 100% increase in the number of WIC breastfeeding mothers.

Teresa is the President and founder of NuAngel, Inc., a company specializing in breastfeeding products. She is the mother of three breastfed children. The need for the book was intensified in preparing their eldest child for the birth of a sibling. The illustrations in "Mommy Breastfeeds our Baby" closely resembles the Carroll family and portions of their home.

This book is simple and easily understood. Not only does it tell the story to the sibling, but shows various holds for the baby as well as inclusion for the dad. It is written at the child's level. After all, that is who it is for, but any mom can learn from it by looking at all the pictoral details.

This is a very sweet and educational book. It is one of the only children's books about breastfeeding that I have seen, that actually talks about pumping breastmilk! Positive breastfeeding books for children are rare and I am glad to have this one in my family's library. Other topics mentioned are nursing in public and the cost benefits of breastfeeding. It is really neat how Ms. Carroll turned this sweet children's book into a tool to help educate the public about breastfeeding. Excellent job!

I was disappointed when I got the book. It is more like abooklet that you would get at the Dr.'s office ...........But the story is not bad except if you have a boy. Which I do, the last page is not exceptable for a boy only girls. So when we read it to our son, we will just skip that. It is okay. If you really don't know how to approach the subject with your child then this will help.
