PreS—This charming board book begins, "Mommy calls me Monkeypants…just why I do not know." The spread sports a picture of a little girl in overalls with a monkey and bananas on them. "Mommy calls me Shooting Star…'cause I can fly and glow!" follows, with a mamma and a baby firefly pictured. Through several spreads, each with a different bright background color, animals and insects say their nicknames as they swing, play, chirp, and bounce with their mothers, ending with the girl in bed saying "Mommy calls me Monkeypants…because she loves me so." This buoyant board book looks at the silly, surprising, and sometimes even endearing terms that parents have for their babies and toddlers. In each line of the rhythmic, rhyming text, a little one introduces a mother’s pet name for her offspring. While the mama and daughter at the beginning and end of the book are human, each of the other double-page spreads features an animal mother and her child. For instance, the first line in this couplet refers to kangaroos, but turn the page and the second is illustrated with rhinoceroses: “Mommy calls me Peekaboo . . . her bouncing baby roo. / Mommy calls me Funny Face . . . and look—she has one, too!” Nakata’s watercolor illustrations create a lighthearted tone that suits the playful text. I recently bought Mommy calls me monkeypants and not only do I enjoy the rhymes and fun names but own little monkeypants love the pictures and it has quickly become a favorite book to us both!

I gave Mommy Calls Me Monkey Pants as a birthday gift to a friend's daughter, and my friend has told me that it is now her daughter's favorite book. I have since given it to children of other friends and family members of various ages up to toddlers, and they all have loved it. They love the adorable "mommy" names, the clever rhymes, and the cute pictures!

JD Lester's "Mommy Calls Me Monkeypants" is a great addition to the collection of books available for infants and young toddlers. As a pediatrician and mom, I appreciate how important AND fun it is to spend time reading with your kids (even when they're babies!) and this book does a great job incorporating fun and learning...the nicknames are cute and the mommy/baby animals provide great opportunities for new words. My 16-month-old couldn't stop looking at the pictures and he loved the funny names. This book would make a great shower/new baby gift because I think kids would enjoy it in different ways from infancy into early toddlerhood!
