Product Description

Mommy and Daddy Do It Pro Bono is a hip guide for parents and kids alike to inspire the next generation about how to give back to your community - and give what you know. What starts with a little girl asking, What do you do, daddy? leads us to a description of epic careers by inspiring parents - careers as varied as consultants, writers, accountants, engineers, architects, doctors, marketing professionals, lawyers, programmers and HR managers. Readers will quickly see that this book is not your traditional kid s fare of endless role models of princesses and spacemen. With President Obama s push towards engaging all of us to volunteer and serve our communities, this book serves as a conversation-starter and share with us what inspires you.

All proceeds from this book are dedicated to the Taproot Foundation, the leading organization in the pro bono service movement.

About the Author

As parents living in Brooklyn, Kara and Aaron Hurst were inspired to write this book because we found that there were few books available for our children that speak to careers - and blending professional work with a commitment to service. Kara is a Managing Director at Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), a global business network and consultancy focused on sustainability. Aaron is the founder of the Taproot Foundation, a leading pro bono service agency that strengthens nonprofits by engaging business professionals in service. Illustrator Kevin McGrath also lives in Brooklyn, and works as a Special Educator and artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring American Literature, April 23, 2009
This is a wonderfully written and illustrated book. My children and I have enjoyed reading it and talking about pro bono work. They now have insight into what their father does.

Thank you Aaron,Kara and Kevin for providing the inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liked it so much that we bought 500 copies, April 14, 2009
Mommy & Daddy Do It Pro Bono is especially refreshing in these all too serious of times. The concept is brilliant: tell kids that their seemingly boring parents really are superheroes, or at least heroes to the people they help through their pro bono work. And if they're in the growing minority that doesn't give back, their kids will almost certainly give them hell for it, as they should.

Our nonprofit recruits architecture and design firms to pledge 1% of their time to pro bono service. We've tried any and everything to convey the power of pro bono service, but nothing compares to this book. We think the message of Mommy & Daddy Do It Pro Bono is so strong and so clear that we sent each of our 500 firms a complimentary copy. We hosted a book-signing and launch party--complete with milk and cookies--because we believe this book has the potential to truly inspire people, including the next generation.

Finally, this is much more than a children's book. This is a book for all ages about what it means to be a citizen. Hats off to the clever authors and skillful illustrator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need more books like this, September 12, 2009
The pervasive egocentrism of the "ME generation" and the "Gen X"ers perpetuation of the entitlements have desparately needed an antidote! Mommy and Daddy Do It Pro Bono is the first children's book I have seen that advances the concept of making a donation beyond the check book. Written in an appropriately simple voice for children, the message is meaningful and accessable to all audiences without being childish. Children of professional parents will relate most readily to the content in this book, but the door is open to make the point regardless of socio-economic strata. Kudos to the authors Kara and Aaron Hurst for launching this consciousness raising vehicle, and Kevin McGrath for his brilliantly colorfull illustrations. I am hoping it is the first of a series.
