Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I am a working mother and wife who like most, is just trying to balance it all while hoping to still keep some semblance of self-identity; not Jennifer the mom, Jennifer the wife, or Jennifer the career woman...just Jennifer. It's definitely a work in progress!  Having been raised in the Midwest, corporate relocation resulted in us being transplanted to New Jersey, where my husband and I are raising our two young daughters.

I stumbled upon all of this quite by accident.  One day Rebeca, our then 5-year-old, began questioning why my husband and I dropped her and her baby sister off at pre-school every day and didn't stay home to play with them instead.  As I began to think of how I would respond to her, I was reminded of my own trials and tribulations as a five-year-old starting kindergarten.

I remembered my first day of kindergarten (wearing my brand new red dress and Buster Brown shoes) and it wasn't altogether that bad. However, the tearful days that followed culminated with my mother finding me on the front porch of our house crying my eyes out. I had actually walked home from school...alone. She had dropped me off one morning at the front entrance but I never made it all the way to my classroom. I turned around and found my way back home, sure that I was never going to go back. Obviously, I did end up returning to kindergarten, thanks to my teacher sharing with me the story of The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, and the words, "I think I can, I think I can". That book became my security blanket of sorts.

Remembering how helpful that book was to me at that age, I began my search for a story that would help me to answer my daughter's questions in a simple, yet entertaining way. Shockingly, I found the children's picture book market to be devoid of stories about families with two working parents. The rest, as they say, is literary history.

*Families with two working parents whose children are between the ages of 3 and 7 will enjoy this book the most. Along those same lines, so will caregivers of children those ages. I have had an overwhelming response from pre-schools, kindergarten classes, and daycare centers.

From the Inside Flap

"When I heard this story, I got goose bumps. Jennifer has perfectly captured what our families experience every day. The rhyming and authenticity will entertain both parent and child alike." --Denise Johnson, center director, The Goddard School, Bordentown, NJ

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute book! May 23, 2011
Format:Perfect Paperback
I bought this book for my kids and have read it to them numerous times. They absolutely love the pictures and how Ms. Pereyra explains why Mommy and Daddy work to Make Some Dough using rhyme! As a mom who works both in and out of the house, I always get the sad eyed look, tight hugs, and the "Mommy, why do you have to go?" cries. It has been so hard to explain to the kids why daddy and I have to work. When I saw this I hope that it would really do the trick and make them understand that we do it for the family. It really has helped - instead of the cries, I just refer back to the book and they understand. My three year old daughter especially loves the phrase, "Make some dough" when I have to leave the house for work!

Adorable! I have a 2 year old and 4 year old that I purchased this book for. My husband travels often for work and I have a home-based direct sale business that keeps me busy. Trying to help toddlers understand what it is that keeps mommy & daddy busy and unable to just "play all day" isn't always easy. This book has a way of making the kids understand while giggling throughout the story. I love that the author uses rhymes to hold the interest of the kids, but also keeping with the message that no matter how busy mommy and daddy may be, they love their kids more than anything else. My kids already have parts of the story memorized and continue to request this for story time! I highly recommend this book to all my friends and family!
