Good message needs better vehicle., April 15, 2010

Elaine R. Gordon, Mommy, Did I Grow in Your Tummy?: Where Some Babies Come From (EM Greenberg Press. 1992)
This is a book that doesn't quite know what it wants to be. My wife's assessment of it was that pieces seemed as if they were written for the preschool set, while others read like they were written for junior-high-schoolers, and that's accurate. Technical terms clash with baby talk more than once. This stems from the author talking down to the audience, one of the cardinal sins of kidlit-writing. Ever wonder why you shouldn't talk down to your audience? Read this and find out. It's an important subject--that not all kids are born in the usual biological manner, and that there's nothing wrong with that--but that's a message that needs a much better book to transmit it. **

Dr. Gordon's book is well-written, beautifully illustrated with age appropriate language that appeals to all ages. It is the best book of its kind. Well done!

We found the book a good way to start talking about some of the many ways families can be created. It is simple, direct, and clear. A framework through which we added our own story. I got tired of the stories using animals, so this was a nice change for us.
