If you liked 'A Child Called "It"'..., February 11, 2008
This review is from: Mommy Don't! (Paperback)
If you read 'A Child Called "It"' with interest, read this book for a different look at the long-term effects of severe abuse and neglect and how those effects differ when the abuse continues into adulthood. The author paints a very disturbing and heart-breaking picture of a young woman severely abused and neglected by her mother and later her husband and the effects that treatment had on her into her adult life.
The author, the subject of the story, is an intelligent, talented, and motivated young woman. However, unlike the subject and author of 'A Child Called "It"', this woman was also abused in her marriage until well into her adult life, after which point she was raising children as a single mom during a crisis situation. She therefore never got the time necessary to heal (as much as that is possible) from the devastating effects of her childhood abuse.
She offers advice on how to prevent this from happening to other young people and for helping those that have endured this. The book could use a little editing, but the story itself is profoundly affecting.
