PreSchool-K-Many kinds of animal mothers and babies come together in this beautifully illustrated story. "Mommy LOUD/Mommy STOMP" shows two elephants splashing and spraying, followed by "Mommy munch and Mommy chomp!" represented by giraffes and tigers respectively. To indicate how tall the giraffes are, readers must tilt the book and view the page lengthwise. The creatures are painted in bright colors and set against mostly white backgrounds. With their expressive faces, they exude a comfortable sweetness. Phrases like "Mommy SCARY!" for an alligator and "Mommy chubby" for a sow might be questionable to young children, but overall the creative wording and joyful imagery outweigh such concerns. The delightful first double-page spread ("Mommy huge, Mommy hairy") will grab toddlers with a colorful picture of a huge, smiling mother hippo and her baby and, in the bottom left-hand corner, a tiny, hairy mother spider spinning a web for her little ones. On the next page, there's an open-mouthed green crocodile with its young crawling all over it. The simple, chantable rhyme is filled with contrasts--mice ("Mommy tiny") with playful, stomping elephants ("Mommy loud"). But whether fierce or cuddly, tigers or bears, all the creatures are loving when it comes to their young. Human children safe in their own mother's embrace will point at the pictures, feel the excitement and connections, and act out the wildness and the hugs. Hazel Rochman

This is a wonderful book. It is one of my almost 3-year old's favorite books. He has it memorized so it is a lot of fun when he "reads" it to me. This is a must-have.

No plot--just many pictures of animal mommies and babies, with a well thought out rhyming text describing the animals. Author Tim Warnes avoids the cloying, oversweet mommy, and has great phrases such as "Mommy Stomp!" for elephants and "Mommy hairy" for spiders.

Illustrator Jane Chapman seems to have researched animals and their babies well--the baby elephant still has a tuft of hair on its head, for instance. And beautiful bright colors make the pictures interesting even to my 9 month old. She claps with delight when she sees this book, and laughs with anticipation on her favorite pages (this at an age when most books, to her, are just a teething aid). Great book.

This book totally has won my heart. The illustrations are wonderful. The words are fun to read aloud, and my 3 and 2 year olds know it by heart. The pictures totally make the book for me-- I would recommend this for any child, boy or girl, of any age. It's great. It also teaches that not all babies resemble their moms - butterflies and caterpillars as an example!
