Kindergarten-Grade 2 Amy is especially lonely and sad on her sixth birthday. Gary, her mother's former boyfriend, will not be there. (Divorced from her mother, her father never comes to see her.) Despite a trip to the museum with her mother and the anticipation of a special birthday supper, the day is fraught with confusion and depression for the little girl. A visit by loving relatives for a surprise party that evening reassures her that she is very much loved. Except for the surprise party ending, the text strikingly depicts a little girl in mental turmoil on nearly every page. Fortunately, the storyline carries readers to a somewhat satisfying ending. Watercolor with pen-and-ink illustrations done in soft tones accurately deliver the messages of accompanying textsadness, desolation, maternal warmth (and worry!), and ultimately, family love. This is a tender story of a girl's Mother who broke up with a boyfriend. He had given her a charm bracelet and promised her a charm each year, and now the relationship is over.The little girl's heart is broken and she is sure that she will never love or trust anyone again. At her surprise birthday party, her Mother's extended family all gave her an individual charm with the reassurance that they would never leave her.
