1.0 out of 5 stars Breaks Super Easily
We had this less than a month when our little one was able to break the hinge into many tiny, chokable pieces. I would expect that a safety product should be able to withstand the proddings of a 10-month-old- apparently not! Would not recommend this one.

This is the first time I've written a review and I'm only doing it because I was intrigued by one especially negative review in light of all the positive reviews. I bought the product anyway and quickly discovered that it doesn't work on my toilets. Too easy to pull up the lid and seat and completely rip the lock off the toilet rim - no matter how well attached. At first I thought the product was entirely useless. But I'm happy to report that the problem was easily solved. I bought shelf liner made out of rubber and cut a strip to fit on the rim where I planned to install the lock. I installed the lock over the rubber strip and secured it according to the instructions. Voila! The lock fits snugly on the rim and secures the toilet seat and lid very well. I'm surprised the company doesn't include a rubber fitting with the product, as it certainly works and would probably eliminate any complaints.

5.0 out of 5 stars An end to toilet fishing., August 20, 2006
This review is from: Mommy's Helper Toilet Seat Lid-Lok (Baby Product)
I love this secure and easy to use toilet lock.

I used this lid lock with my toddler from 10 months until 3 years. The best thing about it, is that it works well, but does not have to be attached with adhesive, so it can be installed and removed easily for use or cleaning. I think that the previous reviewer must have had a strange potty, or more likely, just had it installed improperly. If used properly, it clamps onto the rim of the potty without being permanently attached. I found it was difficult to remove, and couldn't remove it just by pulling. It also doesn't rattle if it's installed on the front half of the toilet and NOT under the little buttons that keep the seat off of the rim. I have tried it on a variety of toilets. We were able to have a spare for travel, so every toilet was safe. I really can't understand what went wrong for the previous reviewer. I wish I could help her try to install it so it would work. There are two sizes of clamps to fit different sizes of toilet rims, I found I had to use one for our very old upstairs potty and the other for the more modern downstairs potty. You HAVE to clamp them tightly on the rim though, or it won't work, and would certainly rattle. Maybe that was the problem.

The base is a clamp that's adjustable to fit the rim of the toilet tightly. Then there's a swing-up/down latch that clamps over the lid and seat keeping both of them down. You have to lift two buttons at the same time as you lift the latch, I found I could easily do it with one hand while holding a newborn, but my toddler, who could easily defeat all of our cabinet, drawer, and door locks just couldn't do it. Because I did it one handed the trick wasn't obvious.

Well, I recommend this to all my friends, and will buy more for my new house.

1.0 out of 5 stars My 11-month old broke it easily, and hard to clean, April 8, 2010

I had this installed for a while for the adults to get used to it, and only recently has my son been old enough to pull up. Within a month of him interacting with it, it was broken beyond repair. Here is what is wrong with this product:

- The only thing holding it on the toilet is an L-shaped piece of plastic that's about 1/8" thick. My 11-month old son yanked on it a few times and it broke, sending part of it down the toilet into our septic system, and making this whole thing useless.

- The system of spacers they have to make it fit a variety of toilets also make it stick out pretty far and not lock as securely if you have a thinner walled toilet.

- There are a LOT of little crevices and ribs on this product, which means it gets gross fast and is hard to clean. You basically can't clean it without taking it off and submerging/rinsing the whole thing. And to take it off the toilet you have to try to pry open a little plastic lever *inside the bowl* where it is grossest. Also, the ratchet piece goes in once and then can't be completely removed, and so there is no way to completely sanitize it. There was black stuff growing in there that I tried everything to clean, but since you can't take it apart and the pieces fit closely together, it's a smelly mildew haven.

The only pros: before it broke it did prevent the lid from coming up (and stymied a few adults who were visiting). A three-year-old figured it out immediately, however.

I'm not going to order a replacement. I'm going to try a different product, as the design flaws are significant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easily contaminated toilet lock, December 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mommy's Helper Toilet Seat Lid-Lok (Baby Product)
The Mommy's Helper Toilet Seat Lid-Lok resides in the toilet bowl. Installation requires measurement of the height of the internal toilet bowl rim, and then choosing the snap-in plastic adapter for the approximate height of the toilet rim. Installation then requires placement of the lock in the toilet, loosely attached to and under the toilet rim. The part of the toilet lock outside of the toilet is also somewhat loose, giving the whole apparatus a flimsy feel (although the toilet seat cannot be opened more than an inch or so). While this toilet lock functions as described, cleaning the toilet bowl requires moving the toilet lock to clean the area under the toilet lock, and the toilet lock seems somewhat unsanitary. External toilet locks exist that are easy to install and more sanitary (see Safety 1st).

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this lock!, June 24, 2008

I think this is the best toilet lock ever. I have a very active 15 month old who loves to throw stuff into the toilet and this lock has stopped him every time. It's easy to use: my 4 year old and her friends are able to open it to use the toilet and for adults it only takes on hand. It's easy to install and is removable. We have them at my mom's house and leave them unlatched so they aren't in the way except when the kids are there. I've tried a couple other locks, but this one by far is the easiest and most convenient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Basic Toilet, November 3, 2010

I bought one of these to try out, then bought 2 more for other toilets in the home. It was incredibly easy to install, just attach a plate to adjust fit and slide it on. It closes nicely and quickly over the lid and fits securely. It is a little tricky to open, and can be done one handed with a little effort. Once you know how to do it it is fine, but you will have to explain how to do it to everyone jnew using the toilet. Just use 2 fingers to press up on the two small tabs and flip the latch off to the side. It can be slid around and the toilet lid lifted up anyways, but it would take a lot of strength for a baby to do it! ( MY husband did it when he had to go bad and couldn't figure out how to open it! Overall a good buy for the price if you don't have a tricky toilet, but it should fit most.

I'm returning this. It is so flimsy and it took 5 seconds for my toddler to figure out how to open it.

I hated this toilet latch! It did not fit tight enough on our toilet. Would not reccomend. We have a brand new toilet, so I figured it would work, not so.
