3.0 out of 5 stars Good Content, Distracting Format June 13, 2010
Format:Paperback
Created for mothers, Momology A Mom's Guide to Shaping Great Kids by Shelly Radic is a collection of ideas for contemporary Christian moms. Selected as the MOPS 2010 theme book, Momology brings a fresh perspective to help readers be the unique mothers God created them to be. Mothering is always a work on progress, with on the job training, and little time off!

Momology is based on 36 years of research-based ministry at MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers International. The author Shelly Radic is chief of staff at MOPS International and regular contributor to MOPS publications. When you read her book, you'll see her as the "chief information officer" for all things Mom!

Momology shares the four core elements of successful mothering and is divided into four parts: core, finesse, circle, and grandscape. The unusual format was challenging for me to read and difficult to follow, I found myself distracted by the "post-it" notes, paper clips, and memo pages...similar to a cluttered desk. While the intent was creative and may appeal to other readers, it did not appeal to me and I found it confusing.

The content of the book is very good, and reads more like a research paper on Moms. Detailed statistics and website links provide more than enough information for a busy Mom. Analytical personalities will enjoy this, because the book is filled with more than enough facts and trends. Over 1800 moms participated in the research for the book, so there is a great deal of data to read! If you take it in small baby steps, you will not be overwhelmed by all the data. The content is good, the format is distracting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Momology June 1, 2010
Format:Paperback
According to MOMOLOGY, mothering is part art, part science, and always a work in progress. Ms. Radic has more then thirty years of research she conducted from the MOPS International Ministry, and is designed to help you become the unique mother that God created you to be.

MOMOLOGY is divided up into four parts

« Knowing who we are: building a healthy, resilient mom core
« Knowing what we¡¦re capable of: developing finese in the way we interact with our kids.
« Knowing who we can count on: interacting within a circle of relationships that support us and our kids
« Knowing who God is: engaging with him in his grandscape

These areas are covered in four separate sections, each divided into naptime-size bites that include stories from an assortment of moms (Field Study), survey results (Mom States) and Voices, which includes research information. There is also a place for your thoughts.

Even better, but there is an on-line sourse ([...]) where you can go share with other moms.

MOMOLOGY is a book that I wish I would have had available then my children were preschoolers. It is full of invaluable information that would have been beneficial to me. No mom should mother alone, and this book will help provide some of the support you need.

2.0 out of 5 stars not what I was expecting~ kind of dry June 19, 2010
Format:Paperback
As a mother we all need support from one another. Momology : A guide to Shaping Great Kids is designed to give moms a helping hand with mothering. Shelly Radic is chief of staff for MOPS international.

Each of the four sections is broken in to several subsections. There are also various real life "field studies" to help along the way.

I had a hard time with this book. Most of the book is about improving one's self as a mother. I really had a hard time getting in to it. I though it was going to be a book about giving our children values and helping them in the world today and shaping their character. I also found it to be dry and unappealing. It read kind of like a text book.

However you may discover this book is exactly what you are looking for.
