Book Description

December 2, 2003
UCLA graduate Katherine Watson has accepted a position as an art history professor at prestigious Wellesley College. Katherine prides herself on change. It's 1953. This season the girls of Wellesley are going to get a lesson in life. Miss Watson has a plan -- to motivate her students to do more than measure success by how well they marry, and discover a freedom they never thought possible. But the independent young woman is about to face a challenge of her own. Encouraging these women to strive for a more enlightened future, Katherine must stand up to the administration in order to inspire her students to look beyond the image of what is, and consider the possibilities of what could be. Includes a photo gallery from the movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Movie is much better, June 1, 2004
This review is from: Mona Lisa Smile (Paperback)
This book is just like the movie ~~ almost word for word ~~ so if you've seen the movie, don't buy this book. If you haven't seen the movie, buy the book ~~ then see the movie, you won't be disappointed.

It's a fast read ~~ perfect for a lazy sunny afternoon at the pool ~~ it doesn't go into depth about anything and it reads "like the movie" ~~ so you have a mental image of the characters gliding along in the book.

If you're looking for a meaty in-depth look of the characters and of the times, this is not the book to read. If you just want to recapture the memory of the movie ~~ this is the perfect book for that!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book that reads like a movie., December 18, 2003
This review is from: Mona Lisa Smile (Paperback)
I found Mona Lisa Smile to be on the whole a good book. The story line draws you in and the resolution is satisfying. I have not yet seen the movie(though i do plan to), but it does not seem that the book gives you much more than the movie does. I felt that the language in general could be fleshed out to be a little more descriptive and that the sub plots could have been fleshed out some to give it a little more depth. I would highly reccomend the book to anyone looking for a quick, satisfying read but don't expect great literature out of this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, December 28, 2011
This review is from: Mona Lisa Smile (Paperback)
Like others say, this book was exactly like the movie. It's a good book if you're just looking for a light, fun read. This book does not go very in depth with the characters, which was one of the things I did not like about it. It makes you feel sorry for the girls of that generation and the kind of life that they were pushed into, even if they were well educated.
