Driving games sure have come a long way since the 1982 classic arcade hit Pole Position. It seems like whenever you scour the racks looking for a new game, there are hundreds of racing titles trying to catch your eye. Monaco Grand Prix races ahead of the competition. Based on one of the world's oldest and toughest races, this impressive game features an innovative four-point physics engine to monitor and control and gives you the ability to go head-to-head against a friend or the computer. Choose from 22 racers on a variety of skill levels and three gaming modes. The arcade mode lets you choose a single race or a championship rally, as well as time attack and free run options. The simulation mode brings real-life conditions (such as weather, car damage, and lighting) to the racing action. If you race in competition, there are 12 circuits to conquer, including the Monaco Grand Prix. A retro mode allows you to race vintage '50s cars on an older track.

While Monaco Grand Prix sports stunning graphics, some players may get bored with the high number of laps required to complete a race. This is also a difficult game to master. In the early stages of gameplay, many players will spend a lot of time running onto the grass or crashing into the track walls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monaco Dream, November 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Monaco Grand Prix (CD-ROM)
As a fan of all racing simulations, I would have to classify Monaco Grand Prix as by far the best racing simulation on the market.

Although Monaco Grand Prix lacks a Formula One license, the masters at Ubi Soft allow you to edit everything from the track adverts, to the cars and menu logos. Along with an extensive editor, the game has various modes, ranging from championship to training mode. The game even features a retro mode, which allows you to relive the dream of the 50's grand prix.

Playing the game without a gamepad or wheel is downright difficult. The cars are very hard to control at first, however one will get used to it after a while. The in-game graphics are beautiful, with the cars shining with detail even with the worst 3d card. Other graphical features include rain, and light effects. The game does slow a bit when other cars are on the race track.

Monaco Grand Prix is by far the best Formula One racing simulation out there today, and I recommend it for race fans of all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the best Formula One Racing Simulation yet., November 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Monaco Grand Prix (CD-ROM)
Okay, let me clear the bugs out of my teeth. I am a great fan of Formula One Racing and I have have been longing for a great racing sim since I owned a computer and this one is the best yet. It still lacks some of the "on the edge" graphics that other games have but the fun never dies. It is better than Official Formula One Racing in the replay, but Eidos' game is better image wise. In this game you actually feel the changes you make in the pits. It could be a lot better but with what is out it is the best shot yet.
