5.0 out of 5 stars One of the few works for County Monaghan, July 21, 2007
This review is from: Co. Monaghan Ireland, Genealogy & Family History Notes (Spiral-bound)
This is one of the rare works to help you research in County Monaghan. Of course, it may not have your exact family in it, but then again it might. How will it help you in your search for family ?

1) It has the families in Monaghan that were granted arms going back for several hundred years, along with the original arms displayed in this book. (the arms are rough originals from the original heralds books). Most of these families were settler families in Monaghan. Most of these give specific locations within the County.

2) It has the family history from O'Hart on families in Monaghan like Clancy, MacKenna, Kane, Duffy, Lawlor and McMahon, along with the list of forfeiting 'Papist' proprietors by barony.

3) The complete entries for the census of 1659 in County Monaghan. Most Irish families are simply given in a specific barony by surname. Some full names are given of the 'Tituladoes' in County Monaghan.

4) Two pages of local Monaghan resources are given, along with a page of national repositories and resources.

5) Two maps from the original 19th century sources are included, along with a sampling of local place names.

All in all, this is a handy bound book for researchers. It is not a giant book of family histories. It is the county Monaghan volume of the Irish Families Project, designed to assist in finding and understanding records with real life examples. The first book in that series, The Book of Irish Families great & small, is the book full of Irish Family Histories. This is the book to introduce you to finding your family specifically in County Monaghan.

Forget the book! If you do any research on-line you probably have what is contained in this book. I did not find anything I didn't already have. Don't bother spending the money!
