Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The Monarch 5-20x44SF riflescope combines a flexible magnification range with a high-resolution 44mm objective lens, helping set the standard for scope performance. The riflescope offers such features as a one-piece, 1-inch main body tube; a creative Eyebox design with a huge ocular that provides a 4x magnification range and 4 inches of constant eye relief without sacrificing the field of view; an ultra ClearCoat system for 95 percent light transmission; and fully multicoated, super-high-performance lenses. After the lenses are cut and polished, Nikon coats them with multiple layers of anti-reflective compounds. The compounds serve to boost light transmission, improve contrast (to pull game out of its surroundings), deliver true color rendition and flare-free viewing, and enhance the overall image quality. The scope's BDC reticle, meanwhile, is perhaps the most compelling feature, as its trajectory-compensating system is designed and calibrated to provide fast, simple aiming points for various shot distances. The unique system integrates a series of small "ballistic circles" to produce an unobstructed view of the target.

In addition, the riflescope is prepared for years of reliable service thanks to its 100-percent waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof housing. The scope is O-ring sealed, oxygen purged, and nitrogen filled to prevent fogging, while the waterproof performance is guaranteed, even with the windage and elevation caps off. Other details include a quick focus eyepiece; a locking side-focus parallax adjustment; interchangeable turret technology with target-style windage and elevation adjustment knobs and caps; enhanced ring spacing that allows you to mount the scope on virtually any rifle; and a unique zoom control with rearward facing numbers. The riflescope carries Nikon's full lifetime warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very worthy scope for a fraction of the price, September 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Monarch Riflescope 5-20x44SF Matte BDC (Sports)
This scope deserves a better rating than the average of the two already posted. So here I go. Since the specs speak for themselves I won't bother repeating them -- Instead I'll just list a couple of my own observations:

Pros:

The clarity is superb, period. Maybe there's some light sensor out there that can tell the difference between this scope and a 44mm from a more expensive brand, but so help me I can't tell. Light transmission is excellent and at less than half the cost, this thing is a steal.

The turrets are crisp and solid without being too tight and *three sizes are included* for both the windage and elevation (yes, 6 total).

The BDC reticule is NOT as think as another reviewer makes it out to be. I'd call it average at worst -- the last time I went out with it I got 3 through a dime at 100yds, so yeah - you can see the bulls eye no problem. The BDC is dialed in for use at 18x magnification for the off-the-shelf 30-06 loads I use (for 55grain .223 it's calibrated to be accurate at 20x). Depending on your loads this could change so pick up the "Spot On" iPhone app or visit their site to get custom BDC charts.

Cons:

The tick marks on *one* of the windage turrets that came with my scope are just a HAIR off and don't line up as perfectly with the selection mark as the rest do. It's subtle and nothing to care about, but I was surprised to see the flaw after noticing how well the other included turrets lined up.

Also, like all scopes, this one has slight blurring and convergence issues at its highest power. It's plenty usable, but not as bright. Also, the exit pupil shrinks quickly at that magnification so I find myself leaning too far into the scope to compensate - I actually bumped my brow with it shooting 30-06 ... won't do that again. LOL! Running at 19x solves these problems and, honestly, you can hardly tell the magnification difference at 19 vs 20x.

Conclusion:

After using this on my X-Bolt for 7 months, I'm just as in love with it today as the day I bought it. And at this price, it's a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Scope!!!, January 16, 2011

This Nikon Monarch scope more than does the job. I also own a 4-16x50; I cannot distinguish a difference in light gathering between the two objectives. Since I'm getting older and my eyes aren't what they used to by, I found that these higher power scopes really help me distinguish targets from background. Nikon makes fine lenses and it's good to see that they have diversified into the riflescope side of the business. I highly recommend the monarch line and specifically this BDC version.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review of Monarch Riflescope, September 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Monarch Riflescope 5-20x44SF Matte BDC (Sports)
Overall I am very disappointed with this scope. I thought I would save some money and not buy a more expensive Leupold like others I have. The BDC reticle on the Nikon Monarch is way too thick and takes up way too much of the field of view. When shooting at 100 yards, the reticle hides the bulls eye on the targets I use. Makes it difficult to get good groups or even sight the scope in. I have also found it difficult to focus the scope for different yardage. Lettering on the targets are blurry with the Nikon while crystal clear with a Leupold at 100 yards. To be fair, I have not tried the scope past 100 yards where it may do better but I don't have these issues with the Leupold's I own (even the cheaper ones). Again, to be fair the Leupold I am comparing to costs almost twice as much as I paid for the Nikon, but I wish I would have spent the extra money. I have talked to several people at the range who love their Nikon Monarch but I have not been impressed with mine.
