A great starter business book that is also applicable to everyday life,
By
This review is from: Monday Morning Mentoring: Ten Lessons to Guide You Up the Ladder (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed this book a lot - it condenses a lot of practical and thought-provoking business advice into an easily-read and entertaining package. Some of the advice is stuff that we all know already, but it is delivered in such a pleasant way that it served as a good reminder. Then there was some advice that I had never heard before, despite having read about twenty business books in the last five years.
Much of the philosophizing is directed towards leading and managing other people, and for a small business owner with no employees such as myself, I found some of the advice wasn't directly useful to my kind of work, but was, surprisingly, very transferable to regular life. I especially loved the chapter on handling all the small things in life and work that take up small chunks of time but eat away at productivity. He has some very solid and practical tips for becoming more productive at anything you do. I really enjoyed the tone of this book and would recommend it to people wanting a "starter" business book. It is interesting and the writing flows in a conversational and fluid way, and the advice is solid and broadly useful.

Short, Approachable, Memorable, Secular,

This book is short and very approachable, written in a unique conversational style with well-defined chapters. While aimed at leaders it is of value for all team members, and is structured so that you could use it to spur team conversation: "Let's read chapters and discuss them each week..."
The tools that Cottrell introduces are simple enough to memorize but are robust enough to use in real life. As another reviewer pointed out, the time management discussion and tool is powerful even though it is only a few pages long. I find Dale Carnegie's books to be life changing, but believe this book will appeal to a wider audience today because it uses more modern language and examples. Cottrell's messages are compatible with those found in the Seven Habits and the Purpose Driven Life, but he leaves it up to the reader to connect motivation and ethics to their system of beliefs. As a result this book can be discussed with people who might feel uncomfortable with management books that tie their values and motivations directly to Christianity. In summary, this book is priceless as a tool for bringing teammates together, especially in a secular work setting. It is short and approachable, and it is neutral from the leader/individual contributor perspective and the religious perspective.

David Cottrell's MONDAY MORNING MENTORING: TEN LESSONS TO GUIDE YOU UP THE LADDER is for any who have longed for a fulfilling career and a mentor who can help them get there. David Cottrell packs his business savvy into a guide which presents a series of sessions with one 'Jeff', who is in a slump. 'Jeff' and his problems illustrate common work issues and solutions and offer plenty of insights based on real-world events.

All Leaders Should Read,

I picked up this book, the first time, during a layover in Baltimore. I have loaned it out so many times that I have no idea who I left it with last. Recently, I bought it again for my Kindle and read it all over again. Amazing book for professionals (leader or not) who feel like they are in a rut. Get past splat and read this book. One of my all time favorites!

I loved this book.
It is a 'parable' (a story with meaning and a message akin to the One Minute Manager style) about mentoring others to achieving their best. It offers key lessons to share with others in an insightful and highly useable way... in essence, it creates a template for mentoring others by providing the key topics to discuss and scenarios that challenges often present in by way of example. Very readable, very useful... highly recommended!

Not only for leaders, but just life in general. Easy to read, loaded with fabulous advice and information. This was recommended reading in a leadership class, but I keep it handy on my desk. Reminded me of Mitch Albom, but more focused on leadership qualities and how they apply to life.

this is a great book from both a leadership and a suboordinate perspective. Obviously more from a leader mentoring lesson, but there are so many good lessons from someone that seem to have been there.

I purchased Monday Morning Mentoring at the recommendation of a colleague. After reading it, I went back and ordered copies for my administrative staff. The content is very applicable to real life and gives one suggestions on how to best prevent or at least handle situations that arise in the workplace. Great motivational book and easy read.
